Cornell was <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/073fLWE9Y9HTofAlIsiqiL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked<\/a> in a May 16 episode of Fortune\u2019s \u201cLeadership Next\u201d podcast about how his firm has responded to \u201cpushback\u201d against \u201cwoke capitalism,\u201d prompting the executive to tout various corporate diversity efforts at Target.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can see the benefits for our shareholders. I know that focus on diversity, inclusion, and equity has fueled much of our growth over the last nine years,\u201d he commented. \u201cIt\u2019s adding value, it\u2019s helping us drive sales, it\u2019s building greater engagement with both our teams and our guests, and those are just the right things for our business today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Target shareholders have nevertheless suffered in recent days as a result of backlash over the diversity efforts. Target\u2019s market capitalization, which refers to the total value of a publicly traded company\u2019s outstanding shares, has indeed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/targets-stock-market-value-takes-6-billion-hit-since-backlash-over-pride-collection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fallen<\/a> from $70.4 billion to $63.9 billion over the past week as consumers react strongly to the controversy.<\/p>\n<p>Cornell added that diversity initiatives at Target are \u201cgood business decisions,\u201d as well as \u201cthe right thing for society\u201d and \u201ca great thing for our brand.\u201d Emphasizing efforts to hire females and members of racial minorities to work in company leadership, he remarked that he is \u201creally proud of the work\u201d his firm has done with respect to diversity and inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Erik Carnell, the self-identified transgender artist who runs the company Abprallen, designed three items for Target: a mini messenger bag with the slogan \u201cWe Belong Everywhere,\u201d a tote bag with the phrase \u201cToo Queer For Here,\u201d and a sweatshirt emblazoned with \u201cCure Transphobia, Not Trans People.\u201d She was later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/target-faces-backlash-over-pride-collection-designer-behind-satan-respects-pronouns-shirts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exposed<\/a> to have a number of items featuring the LGBTQ movement alongside imagery of Satan. Products featured on the artist\u2019s website, which were not sold by Target, included a shirt with the phrase \u201cSatan Respects Pronouns\u201d and a design of a skeleton draped in rainbow colors that said \u201cTrans Witches For Abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSatanists don\u2019t actually believe in Satan, he is merely used as a symbol of passion, pride, and liberty,\u201d said the artist\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abprallen.co.uk\/product\/satan-respects-pronouns-tee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>, which now appears to be shuttered due to high demand. \u201cHe means to you what you need him to mean. So for me, Satan is hope, compassion, equality, and love. So, naturally, Satan respects pronouns. He loves all LGBT+ people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Target executives made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bud-light-situation-target-makes-emergency-calls-after-backlash-to-tuck-friendly-female-swimwear-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calls<\/a> to managers and senior directors last week amid the backlash against the company, reportedly telling leadership to make their \u201cPride Month\u201d displays less prominent in order to avoid provoking another \u201cBud Light situation,\u201d a reference to the beer brand\u2019s rapidly declining sales which occurred after a partnership with Dylan Mulvaney.
