Their desire to engage in these activities is not always rooted in a genuine desire for social justice, though, but rather is a way to satisfy their ego, the study suggests.<\/p>\n<p>The study introduced a new term for this behavior called the \u201cdark-ego-vehicle principle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to this principle, individuals with dark personalities \u2013 such as high narcissistic and psychopathic traits \u2013 are attracted to certain forms of political and social activism which they can use as a vehicle to satisfy their own ego-focused needs instead of actually aiming at social justice and equality,\u201d study authors Dr. Ann Krispenz and Dr. Alexander Bertrams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psypost.org\/2023\/05\/antagonistic-narcissism-and-psychopathic-tendencies-predict-left-wing-antihierarchical-aggression-study-finds-163497?utm_source=dlvr.it&#038;utm_medium=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> PsyPost.<\/p>\n<p>Bertrams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edu.unibe.ch\/ueber_uns\/personen_a___z\/educational_psychology_lab_abteilung_paedagogische_psychologie_app\/prof_dr_bertrams_alexander\/index_ger.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is the head<\/a> of the Educational Psychology Lab at the University of Bern in Switzerland, and Krispenz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edu.unibe.ch\/ueber_uns\/personen_a___z\/educational_psychology_lab_abteilung_paedagogische_psychologie_app\/dr_dr_krispenz_ann\/index_ger.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is a postdoctoral associate<\/a> at the same university.<\/p>\n<p>The study was actually made up of two studies, both of which found that \u201cindividuals who strongly endorse anti-hierarchical aggression to overthrow those in power are narcissistic individuals with psychopathic attributes and thus driven by ego-focused motives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn particular, certain forms of activism might provide them with opportunities for positive self-presentation and displays of moral superiority, to gain social status, to dominate others, and to engage in social conflicts and aggression to satisfy their need for thrill seeking,\u201d the authors told PsyPost.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"sk-tooltip-9096\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1685202016677000&#038;usg=AOvVaw3BHv9qMQC3OwHMBCkGZXpF\">CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The study authors warned that, \u201cminority groups should be made aware of the narcissistic \u2018enemies\u2019 from within their activist movement, as these individuals could hijack the cause thereby reducing the success of the activism in many ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Narcissists pretend to be prosocial, they said, but actually tend to have \u201clow empathy,\u201d the authors said.<\/p>\n<p>The authors said they wanted to investigate the personality traits linked with left-wing authoritarianism because the concept has been met with skepticism by many researchers and there is not a lot of research on the subject.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were interested in the psychological factors behind authoritarianism,\u201d they said. \u201cThere is a wide range of literature and research in the field of right-wing authoritarianism (RWA). However, research on authoritarianism observed in individuals who are supportive of left-wing political ideologies are still rare,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>They used another researcher\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/pops.12470\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new measure<\/a> for left-wing authoritarianism.<\/p>\n<p>That new measure defined left-wing authoritarianism as a combination of three things, anti-hierarchical aggression or wanting to use force to overthrow established hierarchies, anti-conventionalism or embracing progressive moral values, and top-down censorship or wanting to use the government to suppress speech.<\/p>\n<p>The authors cautioned, however, that authoritarianism can be found on both sides of the political spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>Violent left-wing activism has cropped up frequently in the U.S. in recent years, most notably during the summer of 2020, when activists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/unrest-damaged-businesses-state-revitalization-grants\/600128458\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">destroyed<\/a> the downtown areas of major cities during protests around the death of George Floyd.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Left-wing extremism and aggression are linked to psychopathic and narcissistic tendencies, a new study has found.
