Portland&#8217;s only REI store and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/portland-to-crack-down-on-homeless-camps-amid-lawsuit\/\" title=\"Portland to Crack Down on Homeless Camps Amid Lawsuit.\">local coffee shop recently announced<\/a> their closures, the <em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/citing-crime-wave-rei-packs-up-its-tent-in-portland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The REI store is closing, a spokeswoman said, because crime is &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/citing-crime-wave-rei-packs-up-its-tent-in-portland\/\" title=\"Citing Crime Wave, REI Packs Up Its Tent in Portland\">overwhelming [security] systems<\/a> in place&#8221; even after company representatives met with Mayor Ted Wheeler (D.) over safety concerns.<\/p>\n<h3>The Agreement<\/h3>\n<p>Under the terms of the Thursday agreement, the city will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Establish a 24-hour sidewalk camp reporting option<\/li>\n<li>Discontinue providing tents or tarps to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/far-left-cheers-as-homeless-group-seizes-hotel-near-tacoma-city-leaders-negotiating-with-group-as-police-refuse-to-intervene\/\" title=\"Far Left Cheers As Homeless Group Seizes Hotel Near Tacoma; City Leaders Negotiating With Group As Police Refuse To Intervene\">homeless residents<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Post &#8220;no camping&#8221; signs<\/li>\n<li>Pay plaintiffs&#8217; damages and attorneys&#8217; fees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A federal court and the Portland City Council still need to approve the settlement.<\/p>\n<h3>The Bigger Picture<\/h3>\n<p>Portland is far from the only progressive city seeing unchecked crime and public drug use. In San Francisco, which similarly fails to address homelessness, more than 80 percent of residents say they don&#8217;t feel safe on public transit, the <em>Free Beacon<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/california\/almost-nobody-feels-safe-on-san-francisco-area-public-transit-government-survey-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. San Diego, meanwhile, is <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/california\/san-diego-hotels-for-homeless\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">considering<\/a> buying hotels to house its enormous homeless population.<\/p>\n<p>While Wheeler says he wants to crack down on homeless camps, other Democrats disagree.
