Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said during a press conference on May 25. \u201cWe\u2019ve been very clear about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), a House progressive, asked Biden to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democratic-pressure-mounts-on-biden-as-he-works-to-strike-debt-ceiling-deal-with-mccarthy\/\" title=\"Biden faces Democratic pressure while negotiating debt ceiling with McCarthy.\">halt debt limit talks<\/a> with House Republicans, labeling them \u201ceconomic terrorists.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very frustrated,\u201d he told CNN. \u201cI mean, we don\u2019t negotiate with terrorists globally, why are we going to negotiate with the economic terrorists here that are the Republican Party?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Bowman added that he\u2019s \u201cvery concerned\u201d that Biden will cave to Republican demands for spending cuts.<\/p>\n<h3>Alternative Solutions<\/h3>\n<p>On May 19, dozens of House progressives sent a letter (pdf) to Biden, warning him that they \u201ccannot support a harmful agreement\u201d to raise the debt ceiling, instead urging him to invoke the 14th Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>Some have suggested that the president can invoke the 14th Amendment, which allows him to act unilaterally to ensure that the country doesn\u2019t default, if Congress doesn\u2019t act.
