Here\u2019s What The Science Says.\">lower body<\/a> after 12 years of paralysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gert-Jan Oskam was living in China in 2011 when he was in a motorcycle accident that left him paralyzed from below his hips. Now, a combination of brain and spinal implants have acted as a \u201cdigital bridge,\u201d bypassing damaged parts of his spinal cord to help him to stand and walk, even over steep inclines. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At first, he was walking with the aid of a walker. However, the treatment also seems to have induced neurological recovery \u2014 more recently, Oskam has regained the ability to walk with crutches, even when the implant was turned off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFor 12 years I\u2019ve been trying to get back my feet,\u201d Oskam <a href=\"https:\/\/dnyuz.com\/2023\/05\/24\/a-paralyzed-man-can-walk-naturally-again-with-brain-and-spine-implants\/\">said<\/a> in a press briefing on Tuesday. \u201cNow I have learned how to walk normal, natural.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Technology Behind the \u201cDigital Bridge\u201d<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The researchers who made the recovery possible outlined the technology behind the \u201cdigital bridge\u201d and its limitations in a study published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-023-06094-5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The brain-spine interface (BSI), which wirelessly connects two implants in the sensorimotor cortex to the spinal implants, used machine learning to translate the electrical signals in Oskam\u2019s brain to the desired movements and sent those signals over the damaged portions of the spine and down to the muscles in his legs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The study noted that the BSI could be calibrated within minutes, used independently at home, and had proven reliable over the year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHowever,\u201d the study noted, \u201cthis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/neural-implants-help-paralyzed-man-walk-again\/\" title=\"Paralyzed man walks again with neural implants.\">recovery required wearable motion sensors<\/a> to detect motor intentions from residual movements or compensatory strategies to initiate the preprogrammed stimulation sequences. Consequently, the control of walking was not perceived as completely natural. Moreover, the participants showed limited ability to adapt leg movements to changing terrain and volitional demands.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Advances in the Field<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There have been numerous advances in this field in the last few years \u2014 in 2016 another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-tell-oversight-board-facebooks-trump-ban-example-of-uneven-standards\/\" title=\"Republicans Tell Oversight Board Facebook\u2019s Trump Ban Example of Uneven Standards\">team led<\/a> by Dr. Courtine was able to overcome paralysis to allow monkeys with damaged spinal cords to walk \u2014 the same year, another brain implant treatment was able to give a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/14\/health\/paralysis-limb-reanimation-brain-chip.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">quadriplegic <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">man limited control over one of his hands under laboratory conditions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-018-0649-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> scientific team led by Courtine in 2018 was able to simulate brain signals using electrical-pulse generators to allow partially paralyzed people to walk and ride bicycles, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35132264\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">other procedures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in 2022 allowed patients to walk, swim and cycle within a day of treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Optimism for the Future<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The subtleties of some brain signals are still difficult to read, limiting the ability for finer movements, and the researchers do not believe that the technology as it stands now is well suited for treating upper body paralysis. The treatment also requires several invasive surgeries and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fight-continues-for-marine-who-lost-limbs-in-kabul-attack-hes-as-tough-as-they-come\/\" title=\"Fight Continues for Marine Who Lost Limbs in Kabul Attack: 'He's as Tough as They Come'\">extensive physical therapy<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That being said, Oskam can now move around his home, enter and exit cars, and stand, resulting in an increased quality of life.
