Fentanyl would be listed as a\u00a0Schedule I narcotic under the Controlled Substances Act.<\/p>\n<p>Many House Republican members celebrated the bill\u2019s passage, with Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) calling the bill \u201ccritical\u201d as fentanyl continues to \u201cinvade all of our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On May 22, Biden called on Congress to pass the HALT Fentanyl Act, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/HR467-SAP.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urging<\/a> members \u201cto pass all of these critical measures to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/l-a-county-d-a-gascon-dismantles-hardcore-gang-unit-for-new-public-health-approach\/\" title=\"L.A. Bob Latta (R-Ohio), <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/boblatta\/status\/1660738692489662484\">wrote<\/a> on Twitter on May 22, \u201cLives are on the line\u201477 percent of adolescent overdose deaths in 2021 were from illicit fentanyl poisonings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the bill has faced opposition from a coalition of 150 civil rights groups, who penned an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/sites\/default\/files\/media_2023\/05\/Opposition%20Letter%20to%20HALT%20Fentanyl%20Act%205.19.23_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">open letter<\/a> urging members of Congress to vote against the legislation.
