Just months later, on March 9, 2023, Taibbi was testifying in Congress when an IRS agent visited his home. The agency was performing &#8220;an extensive investigation&#8221; of Taibbi, looking into the journalist&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/former-ny-times-columnist-ruled-ineligible-to-run-for-oregon-governor\/\" title=\"Former NY Times Columnist Ruled Ineligible To Run For Oregon Governor\">voter registration records<\/a>, whether he possessed a hunting or fishing license, whether he had a concealed weapons permit, and his telephone numbers,&#8221; Jordan&#8217;s letter revealed.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation, which ostensibly concerned Taibbi&#8217;s 2018 tax filing, ultimately concluded that Taibbi &#8220;did not owe the IRS anything,&#8221; according to the letter. On the contrary, the IRS owed Taibbi &#8220;a substantial refund.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When the IRS checks to see if you have a carry permit and visits your home, at a time when they owe <i>you <\/i>money, it&#8217;s time to worry,&#8221; Taibbi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.racket.news\/p\/my-crazy-irs-case?utm_source=piano&#038;amp%3Bpublication_id=1042&#038;amp%3Bpost_id=123475391&#038;amp%3BisFreemail=true&#038;amp%3Butm_medium=email&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_campaign=rundown&#038;pnespid=qKI9GT9LMqYD2_mbpTeqDpmF5E.wRoNlc.W9x.cwvA9m3pJiG2RSgCdZeqx4G23dETieDwZh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Taibbi has been critical of Biden, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/JT4aJ0XaMyU?t=316\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying<\/a> last month that the administration&#8217;s censorship efforts are &#8220;terrifying.&#8221; He <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/05\/24\/matt-taibbi-irs-investigation-tax-returns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Wednesday that the visit to his home appears to be &#8220;politically motivated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These occurrences are not the only times that government officials have targeted Taibbi. Democratic congresswoman Stacey Plaskett (V.I.), the ranking member on the House subcommittee on the weaponization of government, last month <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/weaponization-committees-top-dem-threatens-twitter-files-journalist-with-jail-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">threatened<\/a> Taibbi with prison time for mixing up the names of two organizations.<\/p>\n<h3>The &#8220;Twitter Files&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>Taibbi&#8217;s &#8220;Twitter Files&#8221; revealed extensive censorship at Twitter before Elon Musk took over the company last year. During the 2020 presidential election, former FBI official James Baker advised Twitter to &#8220;censor an article about emails from Hunter Biden&#8217;s abandoned laptop,&#8221; while federal agencies pressured Twitter to regulate conversation &#8220;related to the coronavirus vaccines, Russia, and the January 6 attack on the Capitol.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Investigation or Intimidation?<\/h3>\n<p>Jordan said in March that his committee would investigate whether the IRS agent&#8217;s visit to Taibbi&#8217;s home &#8220;was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-left-never-wants-you-freed-from-politics\/\" title=\"The Left Never Wants You Freed From Politics\">thinly veiled attempt<\/a> to influence or intimidate a witness before Congress.&#8221; Jordan&#8217;s Wednesday letter demands that the IRS turn over any documents about its probe into Taibbi by June 7.<\/p>\n<h3>Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p>The IRS&#8217;s investigation of Taibbi raises concerns about government censorship and intimidation of journalists.
