Included in the bill was a prohibition on transgender surgeries, including those \u201cthat artificially constructs tissue having the appearance of genitalia differing from the minor\u2019s sex, including metoidioplasty,\u00a0 phalloplasty, and vaginoplasty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was sponsored by Republican Representative Gabe Firment and called the \u201cStop Harming Our Kids Act.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis bill simply protects kids from harm by ending the use of unproven, experimental, and irreversible chemical and surgical procedures on children in Louisiana suffering from a condition called gender dysphoria,\u201d Firment said during his <a href=\"https:\/\/senate.la.gov\/s_video\/VideoArchivePlayer?v=senate\/2023\/05\/052423HW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">testimony<\/a> at the Wednesday committee hearing. \u201cThese children deserve to be treated with dignity and respect and our best served by compassionate and effective mental health care and counseling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSenators, when you hear testimony from those in the healthcare field opposed to this bill, I want you to consider how lucrative these experimental procedures are for the gender industry. A single subcutaneous implant of a puberty blocking agent can cost up to $50,000,\u201d Firment added. \u201cWe know that starting kids on puberty blockers practically always leads to injecting children with extraordinary doses of wrong-sex hormones, then to mutilating surgeries, and then to being lifelong customers of the gender industry and big pharma.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Firment said that he was worried that Louisiana would become a destination for people in other states in the South to bring their kids for transgender procedures since lawmakers have taken action in nearby Mississippi, Arkansas, and Texas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mills, a pharmacist, who some conservatives criticized on Twitter for taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eap.ethics.la.gov\/CFSearch\/LA-108726.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">campaign donations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from pharmaceutical groups like Pfizer and PHRMA, has been in office since 2011. I believe in the physicians in Louisiana, I believe people that are licensed by the Board of Medical Examiners are well regulated,\u201d Mills said during the hearing, claiming that it was the job of the board of medical examiners to ensure there was no malpractice related to the transgender procedures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/gambit\/news\/the_latest\/louisiana-wont-ban-gender-affirming-care-for-minors-in-rare-win-for-lgbtq-community\/article_98dd09b4-fa64-11ed-a7e2-032201ff3476.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that Democrat Governor John Bel Edward had been pushing lawmakers to block the bill.
