The White House and the House GOP are just more than a week away from June 1, when Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the U.S. could be unable to pay its bills.<\/p>\n<h3>Biden Reluctantly Enters Negotiations with McCarthy<\/h3>\n<p>Biden entered negotiations with McCarthy reluctantly, saying for weeks that the White House would negotiate on the budget but not the debt ceiling. The president and Democrats broadly called for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/poll-most-americans-want-spending-cuts-included-in-debt-ceiling-deal\/\" title=\"Poll: Majority of Americans Favor Spending Cuts in Debt Ceiling Deal.\">clean debt ceiling raise<\/a> even after the House passed a bill that would raise the debt ceiling while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/three-quarters-of-americans-say-they-are-tightening-their-belts-to-deal-with-recession\/\" title=\"Three-Quarters Of Americans Say They Are Tightening Their Belts To Deal With Recession\">cutting discretionary spending<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-passes-gop-debt-limit-bill-boosting-mccarthys-position-in-standoff-with-biden\/\" title=\"House Passes GOP Debt Limit Bill, Boosting McCarthy\u2019s Position in Standoff With Biden\">limit spending increases<\/a> for the next decade.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has stepped back from that hardline position, though negotiations over the debt ceiling appear to be frosty. McCarthy\u2019s negotiators returned to the negotiating table on Wednesday as the two sides try to break an impasse.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThere are a number of places where we are still far apart. I mean, it didn\u2019t seem like it would be this hard,\u201d McCarthy <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wq7NIHh94ig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have more revenue coming into our coffers than at any time in American history. The problem is, the Democrats have been in power and they increased the amount of spending to the highest level we\u2019ve ever had at any time in American history, especially to GDP. And now we have the highest debt than at any time during American history,\u201d he continued. \u201cI just think its common sense, it\u2019s reasonable, and it\u2019s rational that we spend less next year than we spent this year. Every household would do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Biden\u2019s negotiations have been causing some fractures among Democrats in the House who want the president to come back to his previous non-negotiable position. Members of the Progressive Caucus are warning the president against signing a \u201cbad deal\u201d with Republicans.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe president \u2014 I\u2019m sure he\u2019s thinking about the fact that it was a very vibrant, diverse coalition that put them in the White House, and he\u2019s going to need that vibrant, diverse coalition again for 2024,\u201d said Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), the Progressive Caucus chair, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/joe-biden\/house-democratic-angst-grows-debt-ceiling-negotiations-drag-rcna85865\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC News<\/a>.
