And <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republicans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republicans<\/a> don&#8217;t appear ready to let him back away from his agreement.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Republicans Stand Firm on 72-Hour Rule<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Leadership could move to waive the rule if needed, but many members don&#8217;t have any interest in changing their minds on a hard-fought concession from McCarthy.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;There&#8217;s no wiggle room on that as far as I&#8217;m concerned,&#8221; Rep. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/byron-donalds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Byron Donalds<\/a> (R-FL) said, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/05\/23\/congress-memorial-day-debt-ceiling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">per<\/a> <i>Axios<\/i>. &#8220;The House has a responsibility to make sure the American people have a chance to read the bill, and we&#8217;re going to make that happen.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has repeatedly pegged June 1 as the deadline for when the government will run out of all the cash needed to pay its bills. Once that threshold is breached, the Treasury will have to make &#8220;hard choices,&#8221; stoking fears of a default.<\/p>\n<p>Some Republicans, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMattGaetz\/status\/1661027843978018816?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1661027843978018816%7Ctwgr%5Efaee75f3a61c21e554ca902fc5a3ae2cebaf6325%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonexaminer.com%2Fpolicy%2Feconomy%2Frepublicans-question-janet-yellens-debt-ceiling-deadline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">such as Rep. Matt Gaetz<\/a> (R-FL), have questioned how rigid the timeline is. Co-chairs of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus even hinted there may be some flexibility over the precise &#8220;X-date,&#8221; but numerous projections have suggested it is fast approaching.<\/p>\n<p>Debt ceiling negotiators reconvened Tuesday and still appear to be far apart, particularly on the matter of spending caps. President <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe Biden<\/a> and McCarthy met Monday in a session the speaker described as &#8220;productive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Liberals Fear White House Concessions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Meanwhile, numerous liberals aren&#8217;t happy with the state of deliberations, fearing the White House will make too many concessions.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;I think there would be a huge backlash from our entire House Democratic caucus &#8230; but also in the streets,&#8221; Rep. The debt ceiling scuffle marks the first major test of his speakership since winning the gavel.
