Version: 4.0.47--><h2>The Debt Limit Talks: Who&#8217;s to Blame?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"post_content\">\n<div class=\"aplayer_app\" data-source=\"https:\/\/vs1.youmaker.com\/assets\/2023\/0523\/5079135d-258e-4b83-8032-73b1f98b8035\/audio.mp3?length=2746701&#038;duration=229\"><\/div>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrats-blame-extreme-republicans-for-debt-limit-deadlock-as-gop-demands-accountability\/\" title=\"Dems blame GOP for debt limit deadlock, demand accountability.\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pressure-for-compromise-mounts-as-biden-mccarthy-resume-debt-limit-talks\/\" title=\"Biden and McCarthy under pressure to compromise in debt limit talks.\">debt limit talks<\/a> running<\/a> down to the wire in Washington, the finger-pointing continued May 23 on Capitol Hill as to who will be responsible if the United States defaults on its debt for the first time in history.<\/p>\n<p>For House Democrats, the answer is an \u201cextreme\u201d faction of House Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeaker <strong>Kevin McCarthy<\/strong> is beholden to the most extreme members of his conference,\u201d House Democratic Caucus Chair <strong>Pete Aguilar<\/strong> (D-Calif.) told reporters at a news conference. \u201cLast week, we saw proof of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aguilar noted that Republicans briefly <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/debt-limit-mccarthy-biden-default-negotiations-1b97de28d26b85da268cfd1c1e4a986a\"><strong>paused negotiations<\/strong><\/a> late last week after the House Freedom Caucus released a May 18 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/freedomcaucus\/status\/1659267335134355474\"><strong>statement<\/strong><\/a> calling for \u201cno further discussion\u201d on the debt ceiling until Senate Democrats have passed the Limit, Save, Grow Act, which House Republicans passed last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince then, they\u2019ve added new, extreme demands to their ransom list, including provisions of the partisan Child Deportation Act, which passed without a single Democratic vote,\u201d Aguilar continued, holding that McCarthy\u2019s position of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/speaker-pelosis-new-house-rules-package-silences-the-voice-of-republican-minority\/\" title=\"Speaker Pelosi\u2019s new House rules package silences the voice of Republican minority\">requiring spending cuts<\/a> to raise the debt limit was \u201csimply untenable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHouse Democrats are not going to sign on to devastating cuts for teachers, food assistance, or Medicaid,\u201d he said. \u201cSpeaker McCarthy needs to get serious before he sends the country spiraling into a recession.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Somebody\u2019s Got to Pay\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>According to Treasury Secretary <strong>Janet Yellen<\/strong>, the United States could default on its debt as soon as June 1 if the federal borrowing cap\u2014currently set at $31.4 trillion\u2014is not raised.<\/p>\n<p>At the May 23 news conference, Rep. <strong>Ted Lieu<\/strong> (D-Calif.) stressed that default would have lasting consequences for American citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA default is permanent,\u201d he said. \u201cWe can\u2019t reverse it. Once it happens, companies and businesses and banks and other countries will know we defaulted once on our debt, and that in fact, the validity of our public debt can be questioned. And that is going to have permanent ramifications for the American people and their children and their grandchildren.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Who&#8217;s to Blame?<\/h3>\n<p>But while Democrats have focused on the dangers of default, the GOP has emphasized that there are consequences to raising the debt limit without addressing the underlying issues of government spending.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Republicans argue that Democrats are pushing for a \u201cblank check\u201d to continue spending without any accountability.<\/li>\n<li>Democrats, on the other hand, say that Republicans are holding the country hostage by refusing to raise the debt limit without attaching controversial provisions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As the deadline approaches, the question remains: who will be held responsible if the United States defaults on its debt?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As debt limit talks near deadline, Capitol Hill sees finger-pointing over who&#8217;s to blame if US defaults.
