Katie Hobbs\u2019 victory in November\u2019s election.<\/p>\n<p>The three-day trial centered on the issue of whether Maricopa County followed Arizona law during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bombshell-kari-lake-video-arizona-signature-verification-process-will-make-blood-boil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signature review process<\/a> for mail-in ballots.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson noted in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clerkofcourt.maricopa.gov\/home\/showpublisheddocument\/5187\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruling<\/a> that during the trial, Lake\u2019s legal team identified 274,000 signatures that were compared in less than two seconds and 70,000 that were reviewed in less than one second.<\/p>\n<p>Lake expert witness Erich Speckin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/lake-attorneys-closing-argument-least-70k-votes-not-verified-election-must-set-aside\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">testified<\/a> that he did not think it was possible to compare signatures for consistency in less than three seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson characterized Lake\u2019s argument as being that \u201cthis is so deficient for signature comparison that it amounts to no process at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccepting that argument would require the Court to re-write not only the [Election Procedures Manual] but Arizona law to insert a minimum time for signature verification and specify the variables to be considered in the process,\u201d the judge wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Court finds that looking at signatures that, by and large, have consistent characteristics will require only a cursory examination and thus take very little time,\u201d Thompson continued.<\/p>\n<p>He determined that under Arizona law, the issue was not whether Lake or even the court found the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kari-lake-learns-fate-of-her-final-election-challenge-lawsuit\/\" title=\"Kari Lake's final election challenge lawsuit outcome revealed.\">signature review process adequate<\/a>, but whether Maricopa County Recorder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/former-fbi-expert-maricopa-countys-ballot-signature-matching-system-almost-illegal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephen Richer<\/a> and his designees did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be a violation of the constitutional separation of powers \u2026 for this Court, after the recorder has made a comparison to insert itself into the process and reweigh whether a signature is consistent or inconsistent,\u201d Thompson wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The judge concluded that Lake did not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/congress-asks-olympics-committee-to-explain-deals-with-chinese-slave-companies\/\" title=\"Congress Asks Olympics Committee to Explain Deals with Chinese Slave Companies\">provide sufficient evidence<\/a> to conclude Arizona law was not followed.<\/p>\n<h3>Reaction to the Ruling<\/h3>\n<p>Craig Morgan, an attorney who represented Arizona Democratic Secretary of State Adrian Fontes in the Lake lawsuit, celebrated Thompson\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe court\u2019s ruling only confirms what we have known all along: Arizona\u2019s elections are safe, secure, and reliable, and those who help facilitate Arizona\u2019s elections are honest, have the highest integrity, and are committed to the preservation of our democracy,\u201d he said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/politics\/arizona\/2023\/05\/22\/judge-rules-against-kari-lake-in-arizona-governor-election-trial\/70244231007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Arizona Republic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lake\u2019s official campaign Twitter account shared a portion of journalist Rachel Alexander\u2019s take on Thompson\u2019s ruling.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander <a href=\"https:\/\/townhall.com\/columnists\/rachelalexander\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously served<\/a> as a prosecutor for Maricopa County and in the Arizona attorney general\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote that Thompson said \u201cthe statute merely requires the county recorder to be satisfied with the signature review.
