The segment, which aired on Monday night, shows that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) had been calling for negotiations since the start of the year, while the Biden administration has largely refused to work with House Republicans on the issue.<\/p>\n<h3>McCarthy&#8217;s Statements<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>January 24:<\/strong> \u201cWe have to negotiate over the debt. Our whole government is designed to have compromise. Republicans control the House. Democrats have a small majority in the Senate and he\u2019s the president. He is playing with the financial markets of America by saying he wouldn\u2019t negotiate.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>March 6:<\/strong> \u201cThat\u2019s why I said to the president, let\u2019s be rational, let\u2019s be reasonable. And let\u2019s sit down and negotiate.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>March 28:<\/strong> \u201cWhen we were together at the prayer breakfast, he says we\u2019re going to sit down the next day, told the entire Congress that we\u2019re going to meet. At the Democratic retreat, he told the Democrats that they, that we were planning meetings, he\u2019s never had one meeting. It\u2019s been more than two months.
