The two spoke via telephone while Biden was returning home from Japan after the top Republican accused him of being beholden to \u201cradical socialists\u201d as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mccarthy-says-biden-beholden-to-radical-socialists-potus-calls-gop-debt-ceiling-position-extreme\/\" title=\"McCarthy accuses Biden of being tied to 'radical socialists,' while POTUS deems GOP's debt ceiling stance 'extreme.'\">potential default looms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Biden Suggests Invoking 14th Amendment<\/h3>\n<p>Biden spoke to the media on Sunday from Japan as he prepared to return to the U.S. from the G7 summit. He told reporters he\u2019s \u201choping Speaker McCarthy is just waiting to negotiate with me\u201d and suggested invoking the 14th Amendment to raise the debt ceiling. The Biden administration has warned that the U.S. could run out of money as soon as June 1.<\/p>\n<h3>Republicans Must Move from Extreme Positions<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve done my part,\u201d Biden insisted. \u201cNow it\u2019s time for the other side to move from its extreme positions because much of what they\u2019ve proposed is simply, quite frankly, unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time for Republicans to accept that there\u2019s no bipartisan deal to be made solely, solely on their partisan terms,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h3>McCarthy Accuses Biden of Being Beholden to \u201cRadical Socialists\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>McCarthy lashed out at Biden on Saturday evening on Twitter, claiming the president would prefer a default to disappointing the extreme leftists he says pull the Democrats\u2019 strings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden doesn\u2019t think there is a single dollar of savings to be found in the federal government\u2019s budget,\u201d tweeted McCarthy. \u201cHe\u2019d rather be the first president in history to default on the debt than to risk upsetting the radical socialists who are calling the shots for Democrats right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Debt Ceiling Exceeded Earlier This Year<\/h3>\n<p>The debt ceiling, a statute established by Congress that prevents the government from spending beyond a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/government-wasted-shocking-amount-of-money-on-incorrect-payments-last-year\/\" title=\"Government Wasted Shocking Amount Of Money On Incorrect Payments Last Year\">predetermined national debt limit<\/a> of $31.4 trillion, exceeded the threshold earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, both parties indicated that they had made progress on the matter, with a statement from the White House characterizing the discussion as \u201cproductive and direct\u201d and remarks from McCarthy saying that it might be possible to get a deal done soon.<\/p>\n<h3>Default Would Cause Recession<\/h3>\n<p>A default would likely cause a recession as the federal government, a major borrower of funds that investors across the world broadly consider to be reliable, fails to repay obligations.
