The attorneys general reached out in a May 18 letter to congressional leadership and the chairmen and ranking members of some House and Senate committees to encourage lawmakers to approve the <strong>Combating Illicit Xylazine Act<\/strong>, introduced in March by Rep. Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.). The measure has 31 Democrat and 29 Republican co-sponsors.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation would \u201cprohibit certain uses of xylazine, and for other purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>A Deadly Drug Threat<\/h3>\n<p>Xylazine is \u201ca non-opioid veterinary tranquilizer not approved for human use [that] has been linked to an increasing number of overdose deaths nationwide in the evolving drug addiction and overdose crisis,\u201d according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. There have been instances of xylazine mixed with other deadly drugs, including fentanyl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cXylazine is making the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sen-cruz-only-billionaires-human-traffickers-and-fentanyl-dealers-are-better-off-under-biden\/\" title=\"Sen Cruz: Only Billionaires, Human Traffickers, and Fentanyl Dealers Are Better Off Under Biden\">deadliest drug threat<\/a> our country has ever faced, fentanyl, even deadlier,\u201d Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Administrator Anne Milgram stated in a March alert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDEA has seized xylazine and fentanyl mixtures in 48 of 50 states,\u201d she continued. \u201cThe DEA Laboratory System is reporting that in 2022, approximately 23 percent of fentanyl powder and 7 percent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dea-ariz-police-seize-record-1-7m-fentanyl-pills-at-u-s-mexico-border\/\" title=\"DEA, Ariz. police seize record 1.7M fentanyl pills at U.S.-Mexico border\">fentanyl pills seized<\/a> by the DEA contained xylazine.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Confronting the Danger<\/h3>\n<p>In their letter, the AGs wrote that \u201cxylazine is a growing danger to communities across our nation.
