his queerness is integral to his story. pic.twitter.com\/3PwovDh3X9<\/p>\n<p> \u2014 ak (@VENEFLWRS) November 11, 2022<\/p>\n<p>     \u201cWhat she [a Christian mom who complained] is missing \u2014 and what these parents are missing \u2014 is they\u2019re not in the school system,\u201d Barbee told CNN on Tuesday. \u201cThat just shows me that she\u2019s ignorant and has not come and volunteered at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThese conversations, these doors that she\u2019s talking about \u2014 telling you I\u2019m stripping her rights as a parent \u2014 those rights are gone when your child is in the public school system because there are students talking about these things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>   Jenna Barbee, a 5th grade Florida teacher, says parental rights end when kids enter the public school system:<\/p>\n<p> \u201c[She\u2019s] telling me I\u2019m stripping her rights as a parent, those rights are gone when your child is in the public school system.\u201d pic.twitter.com\/SVN52lCn96<\/p>\n<p> \u2014 Charlie Kirk (@charliekirk11) May 16, 2023<\/p>\n<p>   In a nutshell, Barbee claimed fifth-graders are already discussing homosexuality, sex and gender identity among themselves so she should expose them to the topics regardless of how parents feel.<\/p>\n<p> This sounds suspiciously like when you rush to tell people your side of a story first in order to influence their opinion before someone else tells a different version of events.<\/p>\n<p> Showing the pro-LGBT movie to fifth-grade students appears to violate Florida\u2019s Parental Rights in Education Act, which bans classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through 12th grade.<\/p>\n<p> Educators who break the law could be suspended or lose their teaching licenses.<\/p>\n<p>  Cassie Palelis, press secretary for the Florida Department of Education, said an investigator will review the complaint against Barbee, CNN\u00a0reported Monday.<\/p>\n<p> The controversy erupted last week when Shannon Rodriguez \u2014 a Christian mom whose daughter is in Barbee\u2019s class \u2014 protested the teacher\u2019s film choice at a May 9 school board meeting, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>  \u201cIt is not a teacher\u2019s job to impose their beliefs upon a child: Religious, sexual orientation, gender identity, any of the above,\u201d said Rodriguez, who\u2019s also a member of the school board.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cBut allowing movies such as this assist[s] teachers in opening a door \u2014 and please hear me \u2014 they assist teachers in opening a door for conversations that have no place in our classrooms,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>  At the board meeting, Barbee responded by taking a dig at Rodriguez\u2019s Christian faith.<\/p>\n<p>  Should Barbee be fired over the incident?<\/p>\n<p>     \u201cA school board member, an elected official of power who was supposed to be nonpartisan, is allowed to present to the public that she is Christian and that God appointed her to the board. And yet it is \u2018indoctrination\u2019 that I showed a Disney movie,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p> With this harebrained analogy, Barbee made the inane implication that a person saying she\u2019s a Christian is akin to indoctrination.<\/p>\n<p>  Of course, freedom of religion is a civil right enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.
