A former union organizer and teacher, Johnson was sworn in on Monday after running a successful campaign with a stated commitment to build a \u201cstronger, safer and more equitable\u201d Chicago.<\/p>\n<h3>A Progressive Vision for Chicago<\/h3>\n<p>Progressive Brandon Johnson (D) has been inaugurated as mayor of Chicago after his upset win against moderate Paul Vallas last month. Johnson managed to overcome criticism for his past support of the \u201cdefund the police\u201d movement while touting a \u201cholistic\u201d approach to public safety.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson&#8217;s vision for Chicago includes making the city \u201cthe economic marvel of our state, the Midwest, and this nation.\u201d This, too, will present a challenge as there are significant disparities in economic opportunity from neighborhood to neighborhood, and particularly low levels of wealth among households with people of color.<\/p>\n<h3>Challenges Ahead<\/h3>\n<p>Johnson faces the major task of preparing the city to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention, which is set to be held August 19-22 and attract visitors from around the country. But before that, he must contend with a city beset by crime. Chicago, the nation\u2019s third-most populous city, continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-deeply-troubled-over-supreme-court-ruling-upholding-second-amendment\/\" title=\"Biden \u2018Deeply Troubled\u2019 Over Supreme Court Ruling Upholding Second Amendment\">make national headlines<\/a> for its violent crime. Seven people were killed and 20 others were wounded just this past weekend, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo many Chicagoans fear for their safety when they walk down the street to get groceries or drive to the gas station, because our city\u2019s homicide and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/shapiro-debunking-gun-control\/\" title=\"SHAPIRO: Debunking Gun Control\">violent crime rates<\/a> have consistently outpaced our peer cities,\u201d Johnson said in a tweet thread on Monday.<\/p>\n<h3>Plans for Public Safety<\/h3>\n<p>The public got a taste of how Johnson will tackle public safety when he reacted to large crowds of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chicago-welcomes-new-leftist-mayor-with-vision-of-a-safer-and-more-equitable-city\/\" title=\"Chicago greets new leftist mayor with goal of safer and fairer city.\">rowdy teenagers flooding<\/a> the streets of downtown Chicago last month. Johnson said he did not \u201ccondone the destructive activity\u201d witnessed at that time, but stressed that it \u201cis not constructive to demonize youth who have otherwise been starved of opportunities in their own communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mayor said he is already coordinating with Fred Waller, Chicago\u2019s new interim police superintendent, to map out ways to quell violence in the city, according to WBBM radio.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Priorities<\/h3>\n<p>Other priorities for the mayor, as seen listed on Johnson\u2019s campaign website, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/you-look-like-clowns-dave-chapelle-slams-local-village-council-considering-building-development-near-his-home\/\" title=\"\u2018You Look Like Clowns\u2019: Dave Chapelle Slams Local Village Council Considering Building Development Near His Home\">include affordable housing<\/a>, \u201chealthcare for all,\u201d and fully-funded schools.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago is in good hands with Mayor Brandon Johnson at the helm.
