(David Zalubowski \/ AP Photo)<\/p>\n<p>  \u00a0By The Associated Press   \u00a0May 14, 2023 at 5:17pm      Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper was ejected from Sunday\u2019s 4-0 loss to Colorado after charging at the Rockies\u2019 dugout following the last out of the top of the seventh inning, setting off an altercation that cleared both teams\u2019 benches and bullpens.<\/p>\n<p> Harper appeared to respond to Colorado reliever Jake Bird, who clapped a hand against his glove and said something toward the Philadelphia dugout.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cI get emotion,\u201d Harper said.<\/p>\n<p>  \u201cI understand getting fired up for an inning and stuff like that, but once you make it about a team or make it about yourself and the other team, that\u2019s when I\u2019ve kind of got a problem with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Harper was initially restrained by Rockies catcher Elias D\u00edaz, then Phillies third base coach Dusty Wathan prevented the two-time NL MVP from entering a group of players and coaches gathered near the first-base line.<\/p>\n<p>      \u201cAfter that point, I went out there just to go,\u201d Harper said. \u201cJ.T. (Realmuto) was right behind me. Taijuan (Walker), same thing. I appreciate my teammates for coming out with me and doing that. It was the heat of the moment.<\/p>\n<p>  Was the umpire right to make these ejections?<\/p>\n<p>     \u201cOnce we got out there, (Bird) just flew into the dugout and went away. Nobody really saw him after he did what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u201cA guy yelling in your dugout? That shouldn\u2019t happen,\u201d Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. \u201cFlat-out, that shouldn\u2019t happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Harper returned to the NL champion Phillies on May 2 after recovering from Tommy John surgery.<\/p>\n<p> Bird was also ejected.<\/p>\n<p>  \u201cI get a little emotional on the mound sometimes,\u201d said Bird, who added his comments toward the dugout weren\u2019t directed at anyone in particular. \u201cIt\u2019s a good team. It was a big moment. I got a little emotional out there. They took exception to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u201cHe\u2019s a great player,\u201d Bird said of Harper. \u201cHe plays with emotion. I love that he plays with emotion. He\u2019s a player I look up to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>  Thomson had been thrown out the previous inning after arguing with plate umpire Ryan Wills over a called third strike on Kyle Schwarber.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cYou never want to see your star players get thrown out of a game, but he\u2019s protecting his teammates,\u201d Thomson said of Harper.<\/p>\n<p>  \u201cThat\u2019s what this group does. They protect each other, they fight for each other and I\u2019m proud of them for it.
