Bob Menendez of New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>Two sources familiar with the matter said at least one powerful New Jersey politician \u2014 North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco \u2014 was among those who received subpoenas.<\/p>\n<p>A North Bergen spokesman said,\u00a0\u201cAs they always have, Mayor Sacco and the Township of North Bergen will comply with any inquiry they receive from law enforcement and will cooperate fully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For months, Menendez has been under criminal investigation into whether he and his wife improperly took cash and gifts from the owners of IS EG Halal, an Edgewater halal meat business.<\/p>\n<p>Menendez and the company\u2019s owners have denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know of an investigation. Don\u2019t know the scope or the subjects and of course stand ready to help authorities when and if they ask any questions,\u201d Menendez said in October.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0Menendez spokesman declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>The newly issued subpoenas \u2014 including the one delivered to Sacco \u2014 are unrelated to any allegations involving the meat company and Menendez, the two sources said.<\/p>\n<p>The sources added that the subpoenas in part seek information about certain legislative changes in New Jersey, but they did not offer details.<\/p>\n<p>The subpoena for Sacco, a Democrat, was issued Wednesday, a day after he was re-elected mayor.<\/p>\n<p>Sacco\u2019s spokesman said,\u00a0\u201cWe do not feel that it would be appropriate to offer any additional comment at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An FBI spokesman and a spokesman for U.S. Attorney Damian Williams of Southern New York, whose office is leading the federal investigation, declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>RecommendedNBCBLKNBCBLKLawmakers on reparations panel warn Black Californians not to expect huge payoutsPolitics NewsPolitics NewsNumber 2 U.S. diplomat to retire after decades in government serviceAs for Menendez and IS EG Halal, questions persist about how the company won an exclusive worldwide contract with Egypt to certify halal exports \u2014 as numerous other firms\u2019 contracts were suddenly canceled in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous other sources familiar with the matter said some officials at the U.S. Agriculture Department were among those who raised concerns about how the contract was awarded to a New Jersey firm with little experience.<\/p>\n<p>An Agriculture Department did not return calls for comment.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, numerous sources said Menendez\u2019s wife is friends with IS EG\u2019s owners.\u00a0Menendez chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which oversees billions of dollars in U.S. aid to Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers for IS EG have denied any wrongdoing, and the owners have said they won the contract with Egypt on the merits.\u00a0Other firms in the industry, however, have been raising questions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was an unfortunate decision as all of us certifiers lost our authorizations to provide Halal certification for Egypt.\u00a0This had a severe impact on the industry,\u201d the USA Halal Chamber of Commerce said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Menendez said last month he was opening a legal defense fund to help pay lawyers in connection with the criminal investigation.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, Menendez was indicted on federal corruption charges of illegally accepting favors from a Florida eye doctor, including flights on a private jet, three nights at a five-star hotel in Paris and more than $700,000 in political contributions for him and the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<p>The case ended in a mistrial after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict.
