The patients were in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/officials-eleven-soldiers-hospitalized-after-ingesting-chemical-found-in-antifreeze\/\" title=\"Officials: Eleven Soldiers Hospitalized After Ingesting Chemical Found In Antifreeze\">intensive care unit<\/a> (ICU) at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers used a machine learning approach called CarpeDiem to analyze the medical record data of the patients. They found that nearly half of the ventilated COVID-19 patients in the study developed a secondary pneumonia caused by bacteria, after the patient had already developed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fauci-were-just-in-phase-one-of-five-phases-of-the-pandemic\/\" title=\"Fauci: We\u2019re Just In Phase One Of \u2018Five Phases Of The Pandemic\u2019\">upper respiratory infection<\/a> that was caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.<\/p>\n<p>The condition, called ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in the study, was not associated with mortality overall. However, VAP that was not successfully treated was associated with greater mortality, with 76.4% mortality in the former group compared to 17.6% in the latter group.<\/p>\n<p>The study&#8217;s senior author, Dr. Benjamin Singer, emphasized the importance of preventing, looking for, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/secondary-bacterial-infection-killed-many-ventilated-covid-19-patients-study\/\" title=\"Study: Secondary bacterial infection fatal for ventilated COVID-19 patients.\">aggressively treating secondary bacterial pneumonia<\/a> in critically ill patients with severe pneumonia, including those with COVID-19.
