These projects are designed to produce more than 2,000 gigawatts (GW) of collective power, which is nearly twice the collective electricity output of the 1,250 GW now being produced by all the nation\u2019s power plants. The problem is that more power is trying to squeeze into an inadequate grid, and coal-fired plants are being retired faster than new plants using renewable energy sources such as wind and solar are being built to replace them. <\/p>\n<h3>The Warning Signs<\/h3>\n<p>Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Commissioner Mark Christie warned on May 4 in a hearing before the Senate Energy &#038; Natural Resources Committee that the United States is heading for a reliability crisis. \u201cI think anyone would regard an increasing threat of system-wide, extensive power outages as a crisis,\u201d he said. Committee chair Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) and ranking Republican Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) agreed, with both identifying the same culprit in an \u201cimpending, but avoidable, reliability crisis\u201d that confronts the nation\u2019s electricity grid.<\/p>\n<h3>The Cause of the Crisis<\/h3>\n<p>The \u201cpremature fossil retirements\u201d amid increasing demand for power are a result of President Joe Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-top-energy-regulator-previously-lobbied-for-offshore-wind-farm-approved-by-administration\/\" title=\"Biden's Top Energy Regulator Previously Lobbied for Offshore Wind Farm Approved by Administration\">green energy initiatives<\/a> in 2021\u2019s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and 2022\u2019s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that incentivize investments in renewable energy. The incentives have proven effective in inducing investor interest\u2014maybe too successful with projects being proposed and approved sooner than expected and faster than the grid\u2019s transmission capacity is expanding.<\/p>\n<h3>The Solution<\/h3>\n<p>While the shift to renewable energy is necessary to address climate change, the transition is happening too fast, according to Manchin. He and House Republicans have filed bills that address transmission, and he hopes that they can sit down and negotiate in good faith and put politics aside. Barrasso blasted the Biden administration for contributing to the pending energy transmission bottleneck by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/us-heading-toward-power-grid-reliability-crisis-energy-commissioner-warns\/\" title=\"US power grid faces 'reliability crisis,' warns energy commissioner.\">discouraging natural gas pipeline development<\/a>. Without restoring \u201cbalance\u201d in the nation\u2019s energy equation that includes coal, natural gas, and oil, \u201cenergy prices will skyrocket, grid reliability will degrade, and families all across the country will suffer,\u201d Barrasso said.<\/p>\n<h3>The FERC\u2019s Role<\/h3>\n<p>Under the Federal Power Act, Natural Gas Act, and Interstate Commerce Act, among other legislative and administrative actions, FERC is responsible for managing the nation\u2019s electrical grid. FERC is also responsible for permitting and regulating energy infrastructure\u2014plants and transmission lines\u2014and that includes \u201cinterstate natural gas pipelines\u201d and \u201cfacilities for exporting or importing Liquified Natural Gas.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The FERC\u2019s Priorities<\/h3>\n<p>FERC\u2019s interim Chair Willie Phillips has three priorities: reliability, electric transmission, and environmental justice. Reliability \u201cis\u2014and always must be\u2014job number one\u201d for the commission when the nation faces \u201cunprecedented challenges to the grid\u2019s reliability,\u201d Phillips said. Transmission \u201cis, in itself, a reliability imperative,\u201d Phillips said, calling transmission \u201cthe key that can unlock the potential of so many of the energy security measures\u201d in the BIL and IRA. Phillips said his third priority as FERC chair is environmental justice.<\/p>\n<h3>The Bottom Line<\/h3>\n<p>The United States is facing an impending energy reliability crisis due to the premature retirement of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/europe-sparks-energy-fury-announcing-plans-to-label-nuclear-power-and-natural-gas-as-green-investments\/\" title=\"Europe Sparks Energy Fury, Announcing Plans To Label Nuclear Power And Natural Gas As \u2018Green\u2019 Investments\">fossil fuel plants<\/a> and the rapid shift to renewable energy. The FERC is responsible for managing the nation\u2019s electrical grid and has three priorities: reliability, electric transmission, and environmental justice.
