This news comes after the committee sent letters to the CEOs of Nike, Adidas, and SHEIN with a series of questions aimed at unearthing the companies\u2019 potential use and distribution of products made from forced Uyghur labor. A letter was also sent to the president of Temu, an online marketplace, with similar inquiries.<\/p>\n<h3>The Uyghur Genocide<\/h3>\n<p>For context, Uyghur Muslims are a religious minority under persecution in Xinjiang, China. It\u2019s estimated that the CCP has detained roughly 2 million\u00a0Uyghurs in internment camps, where they are forced to experience routine\u00a0brainwashing\u00a0that\u2019s marketed as \u201creeducation.\u201d Meanwhile, Uyghur women are reportedly\u00a0forced\u00a0to undergo sterilization and abortions.<\/p>\n<p>In their letter to Nike, Committee Chair and GOP Rep. Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin and Democrat Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois note how one expert told the committee that the sportswear company is \u201csourcing garments made not only from cotton from the Uyghur Region but also viscose, lyocell, polyester, leather, and linen from the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act<\/h3>\n<p>The UFLPA prohibits the importation of \u201call goods, wares, articles, and merchandise mined, produced, or manufactured wholly or in part in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China.\u201d Congressional lawmakers are seeking information related to each manufacturer\u2019s supply chains and practices, such as a \u201cdetailed description of the steps\u201d the companies have taken to ensure they aren\u2019t distributing products made with forced Chinese labor. The select committee has also requested that each company preserve documents and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-doj-is-hiding-information-about-bidens-attempts-to-interfere-in-u-s-elections\/\" title=\"The DOJ Is Hiding Information About Biden\u2019s Attempts To Interfere In U.S. Elections\">communication records related<\/a> to its inquiry.<\/p>\n<h3>Response from Nike and Adidas<\/h3>\n<p>According to a March 2020\u00a0report\u00a0from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, roughly 600 Uyghur workers from China\u2019s Xinjiang province were \u201cemployed\u201d at Qingdao Taekwang Shoes Co. Ltd, whose \u201cprimary customer is the American multinational company Nike Incorporated.\u201d While Nike has denied it sources products from the Uyghur Region, the sportswear company partnered with Coca-Cola and Apple in November 2020 to lobby against the UFLPA. Nike CEO John Donahoe\u00a0has also defended\u00a0his company\u2019s relationship with communist China, reportedly saying in a June 2021 phone call with Wall Street analysts that \u201cNike is a brand that is of China and for China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The House Select Committee on the CCP has given Nike, Adidas, SHEIN, and Temu until May 16 to respond to its questions and related inquiries.
