The court ordered Trump to pay all legal expenses, attorney fees, and other costs in a Wednesday filing. The judge said Trump\u2019s claims against the paper \u201cfail as a matter of constitutional law\u201d and said the Times\u2019 reporting was \u201cprotected First Amendment activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Trump\u2019s Niece Also Targeted<\/h3>\n<p>Trump\u2019s niece, Mary Trump, was also targeted in the lawsuit, which alleged that the Times and Mary hatched an \u201cinsidious plot\u201d to leak the former president\u2019s private tax records. The lawsuit alleged that Times\u2019 reporters convinced Mary \u201cto smuggle the records out of her attorney\u2019s office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former president\u2019s lawsuit stated that the newspaper and niece were motivated \u201cby a personal vendetta and their desire to gain fame, notoriety, acclaim and a financial windfall and were further intended to advance their political agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Leaked Tax Documents<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-files-100m-lawsuit-against-the-new-york-times-niece-over-leaked-tax-records\/\" title=\"Trump Files 0M Lawsuit Against The New York Times, Niece Over Leaked Tax Records\">leaked tax documents<\/a> were first reported by the Times in 2018 in an article titled, \u201cTrump Engaged in Suspect Tax Schemes as He Reaped Riches From His Father.\u201d The article said that Trump benefitted enormously from his father\u2019s wealth when the former president built his own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fraud-blm-co-founder-patrisse-cullors-blasted-over-real-estate-buying-binge\/\" title=\"\u2018Fraud\u2019: BLM Co-Founder Patrisse Cullors Blasted Over \u2018Real Estate Buying Binge\u2019\">real estate empire<\/a>. The Times report said Trump participated in \u201cdubious tax schemes,\u201d as well as \u201coutright fraud\u201d to keep his fortune.<\/p>\n<p>The report earned The New York Times a Pulitzer Prize in 2019 for explanatory reporting.<\/p>\n<h3>Defamation Lawsuit<\/h3>\n<p>Trump previously tangled with the Times in a defamation lawsuit the former president\u2019s campaign filed against the paper over a 2019 op-ed headlined: \u201cThe Real Trump-Russia Quid Pro Quo.\u201d The op-ed, written by a former Times executive editor, attempted to resurrect the conspiracy theory of Trump-Russia collusion.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit over that op-ed was dismissed in 2021.
