That&#8217;s according to an NPR report that comes as the city prepares to welcome a new mayor who has called for defunding the police.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Shocking Statistics<\/h3>\n<p><span>Only 33 percent of homicides led to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/04\/29\/1172775448\/people-murder-unsolved-killings-record-high?utm_source=fark&#038;utm_medium=website&#038;utm_content=link&#038;ICID=ref_fark\"><span>arrest<\/span><\/a><span> between 2016 and 2020, NPR reported, compared with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/90-of-murders-were-solved-in-the-1960s-now-only-42-are\/\" title=\"90% of Murders Were Solved in the 1960s - Now Only 42% Are\">national <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-last-acceptable-hate-crime\/\" title=\"The Last Acceptable Hate Crime\">clearance rate<\/a><\/a> of around 50 percent. New York City <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/26\/nyregion\/murder-nypd-cases-solved-nyc.html#:~:text=The%20statistic%20is%20called%20the,dropped%20to%20around%2060%20percent.\"><span>had<\/span><\/a><span> a clearance rate around 90 percent in the years before the pandemic, and 60 percent in 2020. Los Angeles <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2019-12-31\/crime-in-los-angeles-drops-2019-police-community-partnerships-and-gang-intervention\"><span>had<\/span><\/a><span> a clearance rate of 70 percent in 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Unsolved homicides may have played a role in Democratic mayor Lori Lightfoot&#8217;s February <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/chicago-mayor-lori-lightfoot-loses-reelection-bid\/\">loss<\/a> in her bid for reelection<\/span><span>. Lightfoot was the first mayor to lose reelection in 40 years. Crime was the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarshallproject.org\/2023\/03\/04\/elections-chicago-mayor-lightfoot-crime-rates\"><span>greatest<\/span><\/a><span> concern on voters&#8217; minds going into the election. Two-thirds of respondents in one poll said they feel unsafe in the city.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The New Mayor&#8217;s Stance<\/h3>\n<p><span>But voters <\/span><span>elected<\/span><span> to replace Lightfoot with Brandon Johnson, a &#8220;Defund the Police&#8221; supporter and <\/span><span>the only candidate who opposed filling the 1,600 vacancies in the Chicago Police Department. He said in 2019 that the city <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/meet-the-defund-the-police-advocate-chicago-just-elected-to-deal-with-its-crime-spike\/\"><span>should<\/span><\/a><span> &#8220;go to neighborhoods and provide supports to community, not just with law enforcement.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Impact on Chicago<\/h3>\n<p><span>Chicago&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pay-killers-to-bring-down-homicide-rate-baltimore-activist-says\/\" title=\"Pay Killers To Bring Down Homicide Rate, Baltimore Activist Says\">homicide rate<\/a> has skyrocketed nearly 40 percent since Lightfoot took office in 2019, watchdog group Wirepoints <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wirepoints.org\/lori-lightfoot-gets-the-boot-in-murder-capital-chicago-what-does-that-mean-for-mayors-of-other-homicide-hot-spots-wirepoints\/\"><span>found<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span>\t<\/p>\n<p><span>Walmart in April <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/walmart-shutters-four-chicago-stores-on-the-same-day-democrats-select-it-as-dnc-host-city\/\"><span>announced<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0the closure of four Chicago stores, affecting hundreds of workers and tens of thousands of residents who already face difficulty in obtaining food. The company pointed to revenue losses that &#8220;nearly doubled in just the last five years.&#8221; The company said that collectively the city\u2019s Walmarts have not been profitable in the last 17 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Illinois <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.illinoispolicy.org\/survey-illinois-2nd-in-u-s-for-residents-leaving\/\"><span>ranks<\/span><\/a><span> second in the nation for most residents leaving, with one resident leaving the state every 3 minutes and 43 seconds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What Can Be Done?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Invest in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/lapd-will-not-seek-charges-against-some-people-it-arrests-instead-taking-them-to-social-services\/\" title=\"LAPD Will Not Seek Charges Against Some People It Arrests, Instead Taking Them To Social Services\">community support programs<\/a> to address the root causes of crime.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Provide more resources to law enforcement to help solve crimes and bring perpetrators to justice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Encourage businesses to invest in the city and create jobs to boost the economy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Address the issue of residents leaving the state by creating policies that make Illinois a more attractive place to live and work.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>It&#8217;s time for Chicago to take action and address the issue of unsolved murders and the impact it has on the city.
