The \u201cOnline Pornography Viewing Age Requirements\u201d bill was passed unanimously by both chambers and signed into law in March by Gov. Spencer Cox. The law requires sites to perform reasonable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/over-700-survivors-advocates-call-on-congress-for-criminal-investigation-into-pornhubs-parent-company\/\" title=\"Over 700 Survivors, Advocates Call On Congress For Criminal Investigation Into Pornhub\u2019s Parent Company\">age verification<\/a> methods to verify the age of an individual attempting to access the material. However, the bill also discusses a \u201cdigitized identification card\u201d connected to a \u201cstate-approved application\u201d \u2014 which the adult industry says doesn\u2019t exist. <\/p>\n<h3>Compliance Issues<\/h3>\n<p>Alison Boden of the Free Speech Coalition, which represents the adult industry, wrote to the bill\u2019s state Senate sponsor, Todd Weiler, that, \u201cdespite consulting over a dozen lawyers, I must admit I\u2019m stumped. The law is so vague \u2014 and the requirements for compliance so contradictory \u2014 I cannot figure out how FSC members can follow this law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout unambiguous guidance, we fear that even sites that make a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/george-floyd-family-pushes-congressional-police-reform-at-white-house\/\" title=\"George Floyd Family Pushes Congressional Police Reform At White House\">good-faith effort<\/a> to comply risk being sued, even if they are using more aggressive methods of age verification,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<h3>Comparison with Louisiana<\/h3>\n<p>Louisiana passed a similar law last year and it was signed in June 2022 by the state\u2019s Democrat governor. \u201cThey are complying with Louisiana\u2019s law, which is essentially the same. So I expect they will eventually comply with Utah\u2019s as well,\u201d Weiler told local TV station FOX 13.<\/p>\n<p>But that state\u2019s government provides a mobile app that holds a digital copy of a resident\u2019s drivers license, and which can connect with a third-party service to demonstrate a user\u2019s age, ARS Technica previously reported.<\/p>\n<h3>PornHub\u2019s Response<\/h3>\n<p>PornHub provides a mechanism for Louisiana users to go through that process, telling them that the site \u201cdoes not collect any data during this process. This process is carried out by reputable service providers who specialize in verifying the age of online users. Your proof of age does not allow anyone to trace your online activity,\u201d according to ARS Technica. In Utah, by contrast, the site simply blocks users from accessing videos.<\/p>\n<h3>Workarounds<\/h3>\n<p>Users can circumvent state bans on pornography relatively easily by using a VPN that routes their web traffic through another location.<\/p>\n<h3>Political Context<\/h3>\n<p>Utah\u2019s legislature is about 80% Republican.
