They say it appears to be a \u201cde facto\u201d endorsement of the Chinese-owned video app amid heightened security concerns.<\/p>\n<h3>Chinese Surveillance and Manipulation<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cChinese intelligence and security services use TikTok to surveil, exploit, and manipulate the American people,\u201d Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) and Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) wrote in a letter addressed to Gen. Daniel Hokanson, chief of the National Guard Bureau.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers expressed concern over the participation of Jon Lynch, an Air National Guard member based in New Hampshire, in the TikTok ad released last month.<\/p>\n<h3>De Facto Endorsement<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe video appears to serve as a de facto National Guard endorsement of TikTok\u2019s platform,\u201d Stefanik and Hawley said in the letter dated April 28, which was first reported by Politico. \u201cThis is extremely concerning given the known threats TikTok poses to Americans\u2014especially so as TikTok is now banned on all U.S. government devices.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>ByteDance Ties<\/h3>\n<p>TikTok was founded and owned by ByteDance, a Beijing-based tech giant. The ties have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/7-things-congress-might-actually-agree-on\/\" title=\"7 Things Congress Might Actually Agree On\">raised bipartisan concerns<\/a> in Congress, especially after leaked recordings revealed that ByteDance engineers in China had repeatedly accessed the platform\u2019s U.S. data as of January 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The two lawmakers noted the short-video platform was beholden to China\u2019s intelligence law, which compels \u201cany organization or citizen\u201d to \u201csupport, assist, and cooperate\u201d with security and intelligence agencies when asked by Beijing.<\/p>\n<h3>Response from National Guard<\/h3>\n<p>In response, Lt. Col.
