Ann Carlson, currently the acting head of the NHTSA, needs Senate authorization to take up the post on a more permanent basis.<\/p>\n<h3>Opposition to Electric Vehicle Mandate<\/h3>\n<p>Republicans are particularly concerned about Carlson&#8217;s potential support for a recent rule proposed by the EPA that would increase the number of new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-climate-agenda-wont-replace-jobs-it-seeks-to-kill-separate-ap-wapo-fact-checks-suggest\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s Climate Agenda Won\u2019t Replace Jobs It Seeks To Kill, Separate AP, WaPo Fact-Checks Suggest\">electric vehicles<\/a> (EVs) to 60 percent of all new cars by 2030. Republicans say this is a tenfold increase over current levels and is too much. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in a letter signed by other Republicans.<\/p>\n<h3>Fuel Economy Standards<\/h3>\n<p>As the acting head of the NHTSA, Carlson \u201coversaw the issuance\u201d of the agency\u2019s 2024 to 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/buttigieg-becomes-the-first-millennial-confirmed-to-a-cabinet-position\/\" title=\"Buttigieg Becomes The First Millennial Confirmed To A Cabinet Position\">fuel economy standards<\/a>, which set the minimum mileage per gallon for new vehicles. Carlson\u2019s standards would require 2024 vehicles to average 44.3 miles per gallon (mpg), 2025 vehicles to average 48.2 mpg, and 2026 vehicles to average 53.5 mpg.<\/p>\n<p>With current technology, fuel-based cars are generally unable to come even close to this level of fuel efficiency. This would, over time, edge most fuel-based cars out of the market, a scheme that is in line with the Biden administration\u2019s goal of drastically reducing the number of fuel-based cars on the road.<\/p>\n<h3>Concerns Over Carlson&#8217;s Record<\/h3>\n<p>Republicans are concerned that Carlson&#8217;s past record of promoting green energy mandates for the automobile industry will lead her to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/senate-republicans-raise-alarm-over-biden-highway-nominee\/\" title=\"GOP Senators Concerned About Biden's Highway Nominee\">propose similarly radical vehicle fuel economy standards<\/a> that run contrary to the law, diminish vehicle choice, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/why-college-prices-have-spiraled-out-of-control-and-bailouts-wont-help\/\" title=\"Why College Prices Have Spiraled Out Of Control And Bailouts Won\u2019t Help\">impose higher costs<\/a> on American families, and undermine national and energy security, all while benefiting China.<\/p>\n<p>After the NHTSA\u2019s fuel economy standards were released, West Virginia, Montana, and several other states filed a lawsuit, alleging that the standards exceeded NHTSA authority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs chief counsel, you had a responsibility to ensure that NHTSA\u2019s proposed regulations complied with the law,\u201d Republicans admonished Carlson. \u201cHowever, you instead took actions that were c<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Senate Republicans are raising the alarm over President Joe Biden\u2019s choice to head the\u00a0National Highway Transportation Administration (NHTSA), who has a track record of fringe positions on climate issues.
