The hotel had illegally kept \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/how-to-cope-with-higher-interest-rates\/\" title=\"How to Cope With Higher Interest Rates\">service charges<\/a>\u201d paid by customers who believed they were gratuity fees for the servers. <\/p>\n<p>According to reports, the hotel hosted approximately 1,000 banquets annually, adding a 23% to 24% service charge to the customer\u2019s bill per contractual agreements. The judge ruled that a \u201creasonable customer would understand and intend the service charges to be a gratuity for service staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Marriott Violated California Law<\/h3>\n<p>The San Francisco Superior Court Judge Ethan Schulman stated that Marriott violated California law that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/judge-orders-san-francisco-marriott-to-pay-9-million-in-withheld-tips-to-banquet-staff-report\/\" title=\"SF Marriott must pay M in tips to banquet staff, says judge.\">mandates service charges belong<\/a> to the employees if the customers assumed the tips would go to the server. The group said the hotel distributed only 70-72% of the service charges paid to the banquet staff. <\/p>\n<p>Banquet staff earned between $11 to $13.50 per hour, including tips, which amounted to about $70 million over the five years. The judge said Marriott management kept $9 million.
