The move is aimed at boosting U.S. airpower in the region amid increased tensions with Iran-backed forces in Syria.<\/p>\n<h3>Increased Bomb Load<\/h3>\n<p>The Warthogs will get software updates enabling them to carry up to 16 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/104573\/gbu-39b-small-diameter-bomb-weapon-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Small Diameter Bombs<\/a> within weeks, said Lt. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, who leads Air Forces Central Command.<\/p>\n<p>With each plane carrying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/a-10-warthog-to-soon-carry-16-small-diameter-bombs-in-combat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four SDB bomb racks<\/a>, a flight of four A-10s could bomb up to 64 ground targets, a nearly three-fold increase. Each plane can also carry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/america-is-gifting-ukraine-a-new-air-defense-network-to-stop-russias-strikes\/\" title=\"America is Gifting Ukraine a New Air Defense Network to Stop Russia's Strikes\">laser-guided rockets<\/a> along with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=brrrt&#038;ei=nNhKZKKMDuCZwt0P1fCcoAM&#038;ved=0ahUKEwiiytf98Mr-AhXgjLAFHVU4BzQQ4dUDCBA&#038;uact=5&#038;oq=brrrt&#038;gs_lcp=Cgxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAQAzIICAAQigUQkQIyBQgAEIAEMgUIABCABDIFCAAQgAQyBQgAEIAEMgUIABCABDIFCAAQgAQyBQgAEIAEMgcIABCABBAKMgcIABCABBAKOgoIABBHENYEELADOgoIABCKBRCwAxBDSgQIQRgAUPEIWPEIYLYNaAFwAXgAgAF0iAF0kgEDMC4xmAEAoAEByAEKwAEB&#038;sclient=gws-wiz-serp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/a-10s-re-deploy-to-middle-east-with-new-mission-new-weapon\/\" title=\"A-10s Re-deploy to Middle East With New Mission, New Weapon\">famed 30mm tankbusting gun<\/a><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s a lot of targets that you can hit from an air-to-ground perspective,\u201d Grynkewich said.<\/p>\n<h3>Flexibility and Capability<\/h3>\n<p>The rugged attack jet also gives commanders more flexibility because it can fly from short or dirt runways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would be able to maneuver [the A-10] very rapidly to different locations and show an ability to do strike operations that really would be very difficult to to counter in any meaningful way should things escalate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3>Threats in the Region<\/h3>\n<p>U.S. officials say Iranian-backed militia groups are active in Syria and occasionally attack American forces in the region. The A-10 could also be used to patrol the Strait of Hormuz, where Iranian go-fast boats have harassed warships and tankers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere certainly are maritime threats that are out there that are promulgated by the Iranians,\u201d Grynkewich said. \u201cThe A-10 brings you a capability that can counter that, as well\u2014kinetically if necessary with those rockets and the gun.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Experimentation Phase<\/h3>\n<p>Air Forces Central aims to experiment with the A-10\u2019s ability to shoot down enemy drones. Since the A-10 lacks a radar, officials plan to use a network of U.S. and allied radars to guide the attack jets to their uncrewed targets.
