The move is designed to lower gas prices for some motorists as Friday\u2019s American Automobile Association data <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shows<\/a> prices are slowly on the rise nationwide over the past month or so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAllowing E15 sales during the summer driving season will not only help increase fuel supply, but support American farmers, strengthen U.S. energy security, and provide relief to drivers across the country,\u201d EPA Administration Michael Regan said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/epa-issues-emergency-fuel-waiver-e15-sales-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement,<\/a> adding that the move is designed to \u201c[protect] Americans from fuel supply challenges resulting from the ongoing war in Ukraine by ensuring consumers have more choices at the pump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Normally, federal anti-smog rules bar sales of E15 from being sold between June 1 and Sept. 15 across much of the United States. The EPA\u2019s announcement temporarily removes that regulation.<\/p>\n<p>Adding ethanol to gasoline is known to increase smog pollution in hot weather, but the EPA said it does not expect the move to have a significant impact on emissions.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. gasoline prices at the pump averaged about $3.63 a gallon on Friday, versus $4.14 a gallon a year ago, data from the American Automobile Association showed. However, prices have increased by about 20 cents over the past four weeks or so, according to the data.<\/p>\n<p>The federal agency estimates that E15 is on average about 25 cents a gallon cheaper than E10, the widely available 87 octane gasoline, according to Friday\u2019s statement.\u00a0Last year, the Biden administration issued a similar waiver as part of a series of measures to help address historically high gasoline prices.<\/p>\n<p>The EPA said the \u201cfuel waiver will go into effect on May 1 when terminal operators would otherwise no longer be able to sell E15 in the affected regions of the country and will last through May 20 which is the statutory maximum of 20 days.\u201d\u00a0 After that, the agency said it will monitor the supply and \u201cexpects to issue new waivers effectively extending the emergency fuel waiver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While several renewable energy and biofuel organizations lauded the move, the\u00a0American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers criticized the EPA\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. market is well supplied with gasoline, which EIA data make clear,\u201d said American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers President Chet Thompson told Reuters. \u201cTherefore, we\u2019re anxious to see how EPA is going to justify this decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Warnings<\/h2>\n<p>There have been warnings issued by various automotive groups and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fuelox.com\/2018\/12\/28\/beware-the-dangers-of-e-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">websites<\/a> over the past decade or so and claims that E15 fuel can be\u00a0corrosive to certain metal and rubber engine components. AAA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2012\/11\/30\/aaa-e15-gas-harm-cars\/1735793\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued<\/a> a notice in 2012 about the gas, calling on retailers to stop selling the fuel because it would void the warranties on some vehicles.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4950899\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/12\/29\/GettyImages-1402005915-1200x800.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/12\/29\/GettyImages-1402005915-1200x800.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a> Gas prices are seen on an Exxon Mobil gas station sign in Houston, Texas on June 9, 2022. (Brandon Bell\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, the EPA, for years, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/fuels-registration-reporting-and-compliance-help\/e15-fuel-registration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said <\/a>the fuel is fine to use in most gasoline-powered cars, trucks, and SUVs made in the year 2001 or later.<\/p>\n<p>E15, also known as unleaded 88, isn\u2019t recommended for use in motorcycles, school buses, delivery trucks, snowmobiles, boats, chainsaws, and lawnmowers, according to the EPA\u2019s website. It also recommends that drivers of cars, trucks, and other vehicles with the model year 2000 or earlier shouldn\u2019t use the fuel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmotorcyclist.com\/judges-strike-down-epa-rule-allowing-year-round-e15-fuel-sales\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In 2021<\/a>, the American Motorcyclist Association filed a lawsuit against the EPA over its E15 policies and argued \u201cthat fuel blends containing more than the standard 10 percent ethanol\u201d have \u201cdamaged engines and exhaust systems,\u201d according to a statement from the group.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Knizek, an auto engineer at Consumer Reports, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/cars\/car-repair-maintenance\/can-using-gas-with-15-percent-ethanol-damage-your-car-a7855829511\/#:~:text=The%20EPA%20says%20E15%20can,such%20as%20boats%20and%20snowmobiles.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> his own website last year that E15 can cause vehicles to have poorer gas mileage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went into Consumer Reports\u2019 garage and looked at two random cars we had\u2014a 2022 Hyundai and a 2023 Acura.
