The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/five-unorthodox-pro-life-bills-advancing-in-state-legislatures\/\" title=\"Five Unorthodox Pro-Life Bills Advancing In State Legislatures\">pro-life measures<\/a> were torpedoed by several Republicans who refused to vote for them, leading to their downfall.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Nebraska<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/nebraska\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nebraska<\/a>, a six<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/unacceptable-two-red-states-each-fail-to-pass-pro-life-protections-by-one-vote\/\" title=\"\u2018Unacceptable\u2019: Two Red States Each Fail To Pass Pro-Life Protections By One Vote\">-week abortion ban fell short<\/a> of the 33 votes it needed to get past a filibuster after a 32-15 vote in the state Senate. One Republican abstained from voting, causing the bill to fail.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sen. Merv Riepe, who had attempted to change the bill to a 12-week ban, abstained from voting on the six-week ban, earning the condemnation of Republican Governor Jim Pillen.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI am profoundly disappointed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nebraska-dems-cry-shriek-with-joy-after-killing-babies-in-womb-remains-legal-in-cornhusker-state\/\" title=\"Nebraska Dems Cry, Shriek With Joy After Killing Babies In Womb Remains Legal In Cornhusker State\">cloture vote today<\/a>,\u201d Pillen <a href=\"https:\/\/omaha.com\/news\/state-and-regional\/govt-and-politics\/six-week-abortion-ban-dies-in-nebraska-legislature\/article_1f041dfc-e502-11ed-93a6-43c18c71b0c9.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cIt is unacceptable for senators to be present not voting on such a momentous vote. I call on Senator Merv Riepe to make a motion to reconsider and stand by the commitments to life he has made in the past.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe must embrace the future of reproductive rights,\u201d Reipe claimed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/04\/28\/abortion-bans-south-carolina-nebraska-fail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying<\/a> that the six-week ban is too early because some women might not know that they are pregnant at that time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Planned Parenthood Advocates of Nebraska executive director Andi Curry Grubb celebrated the failure of the bill, saying that the vote was a \u201chuge victory for abortion access in Nebraska, the Midwest, and for the country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A video shared on Twitter by Sen. Megan Hunt showed a group of women cheering, waving, hugging, and crying after the pro-life measure failed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>South Carolina<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/south-carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Carolina<\/a>, three Republican women led a filibuster against a bill called the \u201cHuman Life Protection Act,\u201d causing the vote to fail 22-21. The proposed bill would have banned abortion from conception, making it the third time the body has failed to increase protections for the unborn since <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> was overturned.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Republican Sen. Penry Gustafson <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-carolina-abortion-ban-legislature-8a3d4c18db8aabfc869b9466aa4f76aa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that the proposed bill had \u201cno room for empathy, reality or graciousness\u201d but that she was still \u201cpro-life.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another Republican, Sen. Sandy Senn, accused the Republican men of \u201cmetaphorically\u201d slapping the women in the chamber because of the bill and compared it to \u201cThe Handmaid\u2019s Tale.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Senn has helped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/the-white-males-have-lost-south-carolina-republicans-block-proposed-state-abortion-ban-threaten-filibuster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blocked similar legislation in the past<\/a>, previously taking aim at the chamber\u2019s \u201cwhite males.\u201d The other Republican who helped lead the charge against the bill was Sen. Katrina Shealy. The three other Republicans who joined the Democrats were Sen. Tom Davis, Sen. Greg Hembree, and Sen. Luke Rankin.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After the failure of the bill, abortion is still legal in the state through 22 weeks, making it a popular destination for women who want abortions in nearby conservative states.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Earlier this month, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the Heartbeat Protection Act into law late Thursday night, which prohibits abortions in the state once an unborn child has a detectable heartbeat.
