This was revealed by Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz during his testimony to Congress on April 27.<\/p>\n<h3>High Error Rate<\/h3>\n<p>According to Horowitz, around 30 percent of the approximately 3.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fbi-snooped-on-americans-data-at-record-pace-last-year\/\" title=\"FBI Snooped On Americans\u2019 Data At Record Pace Last Year\">4 million searches<\/a> were done in error. \u201cIt\u2019s obviously very concerning that there\u2019s that volume of searches,\u201d he said. The bill enables U.S. authorities to gather information on U.S. citizens suspected of being involved with possible spies or terrorists.<\/p>\n<h3>New Legislation Needed<\/h3>\n<p>Sharon Bradford Franklin, chair of the U.S. Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, told members that Congress should pass new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/over-one-million-secret-fbi-searches-made-in-error-watchdog\/\" title=\"Over One Million Secret FBI Searches Made in Error: Watchdog\">legislation imposing greater safeguards<\/a> into the system to protect Americans. That should include requiring probable cause or court review for each query of an American, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongress certainly has the authority to do that. And I think that\u2019s one of the key issues for this committee in the Congress to consider,\u201d Horowitz said. Adding new requirements, though, could increase the FBI\u2019s workload, he said.<\/p>\n<h3>Support for Adding New Requirements<\/h3>\n<p>Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) indicated support for adding new requirements. That was up from just 1.2 million in 2020.<\/li>\n<li>An FBI spokesperson disputed that searches were done in error, pointing to a previous report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s time to take action and protect the privacy of Americans.
