Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) has also called for negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Senate\u2019s done nothing,\u201d McCarthy said in an April 27 interview with Bloomberg. \u201cThey haven\u2019t done anything on the debt ceiling, and the president\u2019s ignored this problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy is concerned that Biden&#8217;s refusal to negotiate the debt ceiling issue is putting the U.S. economy in &#8220;jeopardy.&#8221; The last time the two met to discuss the matter was on Feb. 1. McCarthy believes that only House Republicans are serious about preventing a U.S. debt default.<\/p>\n<h3>The Republican Bill<\/h3>\n<p>The GOP bill to raise the debt limit, called the \u201cLimit, Save, Grow Act,\u201d was passed by the House in a single day on April 27 by a 217\u2013215 majority. Republicans intend the bill to be the basis for talks with Democrats.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The bill calls for capping spending growth to 1 percent a year<\/li>\n<li>Returning discretionary spending to 2022 levels<\/li>\n<li>Repealing certain tax credits<\/li>\n<li>Removing barriers to boosting domestic energy production<\/li>\n<li>Taking back unspent COVID-19 relief funds<\/li>\n<li>Reimposing work requirements for people on welfare<\/li>\n<li>Canceling Biden\u2019s $400 billion student loan forgiveness program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After the passage of the bill, McCarthy renewed his calls for negotiating with the president. \u201cIt\u2019s up to you now,\u201d McCarthy told reporters, as if addressing Biden. \u201cWhether the economy gets in any trouble, it\u2019s you. Because Republicans raised the debt limit. You have not. Neither has [Senate Majority Leader Chuck] Schumer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Biden and Senate Democrats have said that the proposed spending cuts and caps are unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Manchin has also asked Biden to negotiate with McCarthy to avoid a default. The American people will \u201cpay the economic price\u201d if Biden continues to not sit down and negotiate a \u201ccommonsense compromise,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly a president can prevent this from becoming a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-puts-economy-in-jeopardy-by-not-negotiating-debt-ceiling-mccarthy\/\" title=\"Biden Puts Economy in \u2018Jeopardy\u2019 By Not Negotiating Debt Ceiling: McCarthy\">full-blown domestic crisis<\/a>. For the sake of our nation that we all serve, I urge the president to put politics and partisanship aside,\u201d Manchin said in an April 28 statement. \u201cSpeaker McCarthy did his job, and he passed a bill that would prevent default and finally begin to rein in federal spending.
