(Photo by ROBYN BECK\/AFP via Getty Images)<br \/>\n        <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Steven Spielberg expresses regret over editing guns out of \u201cE.T.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>OAN Brooke Mallory<br \/>UPDATED 11:18 AM \u2013 Thursday, April 27, 2023<\/p>\n<p>At the Time Magazine 100 Summit, Director Steven Spielberg took part in a master class and expressed remorse over editing guns out of the film \u201cE.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">\n        <script>\n          googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });\n        <\/script>\n      <\/div>\n<p>The 1982 theatrical cut of the movie had a scene where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/spielberg-says-he-regrets-editing-guns-out-of-et-pandering-to-todays-standards\/\" title=\"Spielberg says he regrets editing guns out of \u2018ET\u2019, pandering to \u2018today\u2019s standards\u2019\">federal agents chased children<\/a> around while holding firearms. However, for the film\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/james-gunn-responds-to-the-hollywood-reporter-story-about-future-of-dc-studios-some-of-it-is-true-half-true-or-not-true-and-some-of-it-we-havent-decided-on\/\" title=\"James Gunn Responds to the Hollywood Reporter Story About Future of DC Studios: \u201cSome of It Is True, Half-True, or Not True, and Some of It We Haven\u2019t Decided On\u201d\">20th anniversary release<\/a>, Spielberg removed the guns and substituted walkie-talkies for the weapons.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThat was a mistake\u2026 I never should have done that.\u00a0\u2018E.T.\u2019\u00a0is a product of its era. No film should be revised based on the lenses we now are, either voluntarily, or being forced to peer through,\u201d Spielberg said. \u201c\u2018E.T.\u2019 was a film that I was sensitive to the fact that the federal agents were approaching kids with firearms exposed and I thought I would change the guns into walkie talkies\u2026 Years went by and I changed my own views. I should have never messed with the archives of my own work, and I don\u2019t recommend anyone do that. All our movies are a kind of a signpost of where we were when we made them, what the world was like and what the world was receiving when we got those stories out there. So I really regret having that out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Time 100 moderator brought up recent news about Roald Dahl and other authors\u2019 novels being banned for foul language and reprinted with \u201cmore inclusive\u201d wording by today\u2019s standards, in response to Spielberg\u2019s guilt over the edit.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThose who might cheer specific edits to Dahl\u2019s work should consider how the power to rewrite books might be used in the hands of those who do not share their values and sensibilities,\u201d said Suzanne Nossel, CEO of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pen.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">PEN America<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/refugee-watchdog-calls-for-immediate-action-in-ethiopia\/\" title=\"Refugee Watchdog Calls for Immediate Action in Ethiopia\">human rights organization<\/a> that stands for free speech and expression.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cNobody should ever attempt to take the chocolate out of Willy Wonka! Ever!\u201d Spielberg said jokingly. He added on a more serious note: \u201cFor me, it is sacrosanct. It\u2019s our history, it\u2019s our cultural heritage.
