Sheeran said it was inspired by his grandparents\u2019 relationship, The Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2023\/apr\/26\/ed-sheeran-testifies-in-marvin-gaye-plagiarism-case-most-pop-songs-can-fit-over-most-pop-songs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reported<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sheeran\u2019s lawyer Ilene Farkas argued that \u201cno one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ed-sheeran-testifies-in-copyright-case-wouldve-been-an-idiot-to-openly-flaunt-stealing-lets-get-it-on\/\" title=\"Ed Sheeran Testifies In Copyright Case: \u2018Would\u2019ve Been An Idiot\u2019 To Openly Flaunt Stealing \u2018Let\u2019s Get It On\u2019\">owns basic musical building blocks<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 Sheeran\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-trump-campaign-takes-fight-over-pennsylvania-election-and-mail-in-ballot-laws-to-us-supreme-court\/\" title=\"NEW: Trump Campaign Takes Fight Over Pennsylvania Election and Mail-In Ballot Laws to US Supreme Court\">legal team wrote<\/a> in an earlier written filing, \u201cThe two songs share versions of a similar and unprotectable chord progression that was freely available to all songwriters.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Plaintiffs&#8217; Case<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ed Townsend co-wrote \u201cLet\u2019s Get It On\u201d with Gaye. Townsend\u2019s daughter Kathryn Townsend Griffin, his sister Helen McDonald, and the estate of his former wife Cherrigale Townsend are all plaintiffs in the lawsuit. Gaye died in 1984, and Townsend died in 2003, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/25\/media\/ed-sheeran-court-day-one\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CNN Business<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Notorious attorney Ben Crump, who also represented George Floyd\u2019s family, was selected as the lawyer for the plaintiffs. Crump described <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/what-is-georgias-governor-kemp-going-to-do-now-that-the-georgia-results-he-signed-off-on-are-invalid\/\" title=\"What Is Georgia's Governor Kemp Going to Do Now that the Georgia Results He Signed Off on Are Invalid?\">video footage<\/a> of Sheeran segueing between the two songs during a 2017 concert as a \u201csmoking gun\u201d and tantamount to \u201ca confession.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Previous Lawsuits<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gaye\u2019s estate also sued singer Robin Thicke and producer Pharrell Williams for $7.4 million in 2015. They claimed the hit song \u201cBlurred Lines\u201d stole from Gaye\u2019s \u201cGot to Give It Up.\u201d The family ultimately won, with a judge awarding them $5.3 million in addition to 50% percent of the royalties from \u201cBlurred Lines\u201d going forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sheeran is also no stranger to lawsuits. A judge ruled in 2022 that the British singer\u2019s single \u201cShape of You,\u201d was not a copy of Sami Switch\u2019s song \u201cOh Why.\u201d Sheeran was also sued in 2016 over his single \u201cPhotograph.\u201d That complaint was settled out of court, CNN noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Sheeran&#8217;s Thoughts on Lawsuits<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The \u201cBad Habits\u201d singer previously shared his feelings about these types of lawsuits following the 2022 incident.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s really damaging to the songwriting industry. There\u2019s only so many notes and very few chords used in pop music,\u201d Sheeran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/entertainment-arts-61006984\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said<\/span><\/a> during a video post he shared on Instagram.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCoincidence is bound to happen if 60,000 songs are being released every day on Spotify. That\u2019s 22 million songs a year, and there\u2019s only 12 notes that are available. I\u2019m not an entity. I\u2019m not a corporation. I\u2019m a human being. I\u2019m a father. I\u2019m a husband. I\u2019m a son.
