The accused, Robert Louis Singletary, allegedly said he didn\u2019t \u201clike white people\u201d just before the incident. Jamie White, the father who was shot, opened up about the shooting in an interview with the Gaston Gazette, telling the outlet what transpired. According to White, his daughter was playing basketball with neighborhood kids when a ball rolled into Singletary&#8217;s yard. Singletary, who was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury back in 2016, was allegedly talking with a neighbor and went inside his home to retrieve a revolver. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: I\u2019m on April Dr. in Gastonia where police are searching for 24yo Robert Louis Singletary. I don\u2019t even like white people. I\u2019m going to shoot your a**,&#8217;\u201d White alleged before saying that Singletary then pointed a gun at his daughter before White jumped in front to shield her. Singletary is black, while the White family is white.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A bullet punctured one of Mr. White\u2019s lungs and his liver. White\u2019s daughter was nicked in the head by a bullet, and his wife was also grazed by one of the shots. Singletary was charged with four counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon by Gaston County Police.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Justice System Criticized<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Police have not yet commented on whether the shooting could have been racially motivated. The Associated Press omitted Singletary\u2019s alleged comment about not liking white people from its coverage of the incident, drawing some criticism online. Singletary was apprehended by police after being on the run for several days. He also faces assault charges for an incident in December when he allegedly attacked his girlfriend with a mini-sledgehammer.
