This is the most serious attempt yet to limit teenagers&#8217; access to technology, amid widespread fears that it is harming their well-being. <\/p>\n<p>The bill, sponsored by Sens. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/brian-schatz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brian Schatz<\/a> (D-HI) and <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/tom-cotton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tom Cotton<\/a> (R-AK), will set rules for how social media companies handle users under 18. It adds to several other state and federal bills designed to mitigate the effects of social media on teenagers&#8217; mental health. <\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/gop-ad-using-ai-images-biden-second-term\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Check out this AI-generated ad that envisions a disastrous Biden second term!<\/a><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>The bill would bar children under 13 from accessing social media and require parental consent for those between 13 and 17, according to the <i><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/04\/25\/incoming-senate-bill-would-set-age-limit-kids-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Post<\/a><\/i>. It would also regulate how companies such as Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram use algorithms to present content to younger users. Although it&#8217;s not yet clear what the enforcement mechanism would be, Sens. Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Katie Boyd Britt (R-AL) are also sponsoring the bill. <\/p>\n<p>California <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/technology\/gavin-newsom-child-privacy-internet-legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed<\/a> a law in September restricting the ability of apps to gather personal data from teenagers and requiring them to give teenage users the highest security settings by default. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/technology\/utah-social-media-bill-industry-groups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Utah<\/a> and <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/y3wdpv\/arkansas-makes-it-illegal-for-minors-to-be-on-social-media-without-parental-consent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arkansas<\/a> passed similar bills last month that limited Big Tech&#8217;s ability to gather teenagers&#8217; data. <\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Want to know more?
