With Republicans controlling the House 222-212, McCarthy can only afford four GOP defections to pass the bill. <\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/mccarthy-republicans-biden-debt-ceiling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MCCARTHY SAYS HE &#8216;CANNOT IMAGINE&#8217; REPUBLICANS SIDING WITH BIDEN ON DEBT CEILING<\/a><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m concerned about the budget that they put forward &#8230; and I\u2019m not sure [McCarthy has] the votes for it or not,&#8221; Dingell said of the proposal on <i>Fox News Sunday<\/i>. &#8220;I don\u2019t think there are some Republicans that want to vote to cut education, reduce veterans spending by 22%.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The debt ceiling, or the maximum amount the federal government can borrow, needs to be raised or abolished this summer to avoid a debt default. Economists have long warned that such a default would wreak havoc on the economy. However, Biden has refused to negotiate over the debt limit for three months, and White House officials have criticized McCarthy and House Republicans for demanding spending negotiations be tied to the debt ceiling increase. <\/p>\n<p>McCarthy&#8217;s proposal, unveiled on Wednesday, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/mccarthy-nyse-address-spending-cuts-debt-ceiling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">would return<\/a> government agency funding to fiscal 2022 levels and cap annual increases to about 1% annually, except for the Pentagon. It also would undo President <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe Biden&#8217;s<\/a> student loan forgiveness order and Democrats&#8217; bolstered IRS funding approved in the Inflation Reduction Act, among other party priorities. <\/p>\n<p>McCarthy&#8217;s office spent weeks crafting legislation that could garner the necessary 218 votes for passage. Should the bill fail, the House speaker will have nothing to bring to the negotiating table after months of <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/democrats-slowly-turn-biden-negotiate-mccarthy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demands from<\/a> the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White House<\/a> to present a passable debt ceiling compromise. <\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>GOP lawmakers have had mixed reactions to the proposal, setting McCarthy up for his most serious challenge since his prolonged speakership vote in January when he struggled to lock down the support of <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-republicans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his entire conference<\/a>. Despite the opposition, the House speaker has repeatedly expressed confidence that he can get the plan passed. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We do have a very small majority, only five seats, one of the smallest we\u2019ve ever had, but I cannot imagine someone in our conference that would want to go along with Biden\u2019s reckless spending,&#8221; McCarthy <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/mccarthy-republicans-biden-debt-ceiling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said on Sunday<\/a>. &#8220;This is responsible, this is something we have sat down for months that everybody\u2019s had input in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
