The Biden administration \u201cmay be obstructing justice by blocking efforts to charge Hunter Biden for tax violations,\u201d House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBS_Herridge\/status\/1648810061211353090\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By Thursday, the White House was scrambling to distance President Joe Biden, Hunter\u2019s father, from the brewing controversy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden has made clear that this matter would be handled independently by the Justice Department, under the leadership of a U.S. Attorney appointed by former President Trump, free from any political interference by the White House,\u201d White House spokesman Ian Sams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/white-house-insists-no-political-interference-hunter-biden-probe-after-irs-whistleblower\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Fox News<\/a>. \u201cHe has upheld that commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The criminal investigation into Hunter Biden is being led by Delaware\u2019s U.S. Attorney David Weiss. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/10\/06\/politics\/hunter-biden-investigation-federal-prosecutors-weighing-charges\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FBI and IRS<\/a> investigators have been looking into his foreign business dealings, tax affairs, and more. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2022\/10\/06\/hunter-biden-tax-gun-charges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post reported<\/a> in October that federal agents believed they had sufficient evidence to charge the younger Biden with tax crimes and a false statement related to a gun purchase, but a decision to file charges would be left up to Weiss. The U.S. attorney has remained silent, at least publicly, about the progress of his inquiry.<\/p>\n<p>Up until now, Democrats in Congress have largely bristled when their Republican colleagues raise concerns about corruption in the government and how it may extend to members of the Biden family. When the House \u201cWeaponization\u201d panel launched this year with the chairman, Jim Jordan (R-OH), boasting of \u201cdozens\u201d of FBI whistleblowers, Democrats responded with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2023\/03\/02\/us\/dc-weaponization-report.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">315-page report<\/a> that cast doubt on the trustworthiness of the witnesses. After some of the witnesses had testified, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/02\/politics\/jim-jordan-whistleblowers-fbi-weaponization\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN reported<\/a> through unnamed sources that their claims appeared to not have been \u201cvalidated by government entities that grant federal whistleblower protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This new whistleblower from the Hunter Biden probe, identified as an IRS criminal supervisory special agent, appears to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/grassley-tells-garland-of-12-sources-with-potential-dirt-on-hunter-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stand out from the rest<\/a>. Mark Lytle, the IRS agent\u2019s lawyer, says in the letter that his client already made \u201clegally protected disclosures internally at the IRS, through counsel to the U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, and to the Department of Justice, Office of Inspector General.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What remains unclear so far is whether these government watchdogs believe the claims. So far, it appears the involved agencies are remaining silent. However, one recipient of the letter, Senate Judiciary Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL), insisted whistleblower statements are taken \u201cseriously\u201d when Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called for a bipartisan response to the IRS official\u2019s letter during a hearing on Thursday, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/04\/20\/democrat-sen-dick-durbin-promises-hunter-biden-cover-up-claim-will-be-taken-seriously\/?utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_campaign=nypost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to The New York Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/intelligence-whistleblower-wants-to-meet-with-congress-schiff-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine whistleblower<\/a> emerged a couple years ago, the intelligence community inspector general notified Congress after finding the official\u2019s claims to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/read-what-the-inspector-general-said-about-the-urgent-whistleblower-concern-blocked-from-congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">credible and urgent<\/a>, leading to what became the first impeachment inquiry against former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Lytle notes his client is reaching out to Republicans and Democrats in both chambers despite \u201cserious risks of retaliation\u201d and stresses that the IRS agent \u201cwishes to make the disclosures in a non-partisan manner to the leadership of the relevant committees on both sides of the political aisle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter says disclosures made to the government watchdogs \u201ccontradict sworn testimony to Congress by a senior political appointee,\u201d \u201cinvolve failure to mitigate clear conflicts of interest in the ultimate disposition of the case,\u201d and \u201cdetail examples of preferential treatment and politics improperly infecting decisions and protocols that would normally be followed by career law enforcement professionals in similar circumstances if the subject were not politically connected.\u201d The letter adds: \u201cSome of the protected disclosures contain information that is restricted by statute from unauthorized disclosure to protect taxpayer and tax return information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though the letter only says the agent is overseeing the \u201congoing and sensitive investigation of a high-profile, controversial subject,\u201d sources <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/irs-whistleblower-says-u-s-is-mishandling-hunter-biden-probe-7cd127f2?st=8bfedqlosk4410f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirmed to The Wall Street Journal<\/a> the investigation into Hunter Biden is the focus of the matter. As for the senior political appointee mentioned in the letter, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSEveningNews\/status\/1648833504283619328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS News reported<\/a>\u00a0Attorney General Merrick Garland is that official.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A lawyer for an IRS supervisor sent a letter to lawmakers asking for whistleblower protection, writing his client has information suggesting an investigation is being influenced by &#8220;preferential treatment and politics.&#8221; CBS News has learned it&#8217;s the Hunter Biden tax investigation <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1PTQ5H1K0V\">pic.twitter.com\/1PTQ5H1K0V<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CBS Evening News (@CBSEveningNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSEveningNews\/status\/1648833504283619328?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 19, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Garland spoke briefly about the inquiry during congressional testimony early last month. \u201cI pledged not to interfere with that investigation and I have carried through on my pledge,\u201d Garland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/grassley-tells-garland-of-12-sources-with-potential-dirt-on-hunter-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">testified under oath<\/a> to the Senate Judiciary Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire reached out to the Department of Justice for comment in response to Lytle\u2019s letter but did not receive a response as of press time.<\/p>\n<p>Hunter Biden\u2019s attorney, Chris Clark, told reporters that the IRS agent \u201cappears\u201d to have committed a crime. \u201cIt is a felony for an IRS agent to improperly disclose information about an ongoing tax investigation,\u201d Clark said in a statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/irs-agent-wants-whistleblower-protections-discuss-hunter-biden-probe-rcna80564\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported by NBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, Hunter Biden said he expects to be cleared of wrongdoing. \u201cI\u2019m cooperating completely. And I am absolutely certain, 100% certain that at the end of the investigation, that I will be cleared of any wrongdoing,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/hunter-biden-interview-memoir-substance-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he told CBS News in April 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When the younger Biden publicly disclosed the existence of the criminal investigation shortly after the 2020 election, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/hunter-biden-tax-affairs-under-federal-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sources told Fox News<\/a> that the inquiry began in 2018 and was predicated, in part, on Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) regarding transactions from China and other nations.<\/p>\n<p>It just so happens that this week House Oversight Committee Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/republicans-raise-alarm-about-biden-family-after-treasury-visit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gained access to SARs<\/a>, which financial institutions can use to flag possible criminal behavior, for members of the Biden family \u2014 including Hunter \u2014 and their associates\u2019 business transactions.<\/p>\n<p>While Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/republicans-raise-alarm-about-biden-family-after-treasury-visit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declared that they had found<\/a> evidence of a wider influence peddling scheme, Democrats on the panel accused their GOP colleagues of continuing to \u201cmischaracterize Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) as evidence of misconduct or criminality, instead of calling them what they are: unsubstantiated tips that rarely result in any follow-up by law enforcement,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11983217\/SIX-Biden-family-members-benefitted-Hunters-shady-deals-Republicans-say.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement received by The Daily Mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), a member of the committee, walked out of the Treasury Department on Monday with a message to potential insiders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just walked out of the Treasury after reviewing financial reports on the Biden\u2019s and their web of LLC\u2019s and wire transfers from MANY foreign countries that created a vast criminal enterprise bigger than anyone can comprehend,\u201d Greene said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMTG\/status\/1648037755161571350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. \u201cWhistleblowers can receive protection if they come forward now.
