Phil Ventura said in a statement that the Pentagon is planning for \u201cvarious contingencies\u201d and that it will deploy additional capabilities to the region to facilitate a possible evacuation of embassy staff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are deploying additional capabilities nearby in the region for contingency purposes related to securing and potentially facilitating the departure of U.S. Embassy personnel from Sudan, if circumstances require it,\u201d Ventura said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a matter of policy and security, we do not speculate on potential future operations,\u201d he added, without providing further details nor stating the location where the additional forces would be deployed.<\/p>\n<p>National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the decision to prepare for a possible evacuation was made by President Joe Biden in the \u201clast couple of days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president \u201cauthorized the military to move forward with pre-positioning forces and to develop options,\u201d Kirby told reporters at a White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2023\/04\/20\/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-and-nsc-coordinator-for-strategic-communications-john-kirby-12\/\">briefing Thursday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no indication that either side is deliberately going after or trying to hurt or target Americans,\u201d Kirby said. \u201cBut it\u2019s obviously a dangerous situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Americans in Sudan have been urged to shelter in place.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5211724\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/04\/21\/id5211724-Sudan_23109582691951-1200x800.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Smoke is seen in Khartoum, Sudan, on April 19, 2023. (Marwan Ali\/AP Photo)<\/figure>\n<h2>Simmering Conflict<\/h2>\n<p>The conflict has been simmering for months between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), controlled by Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan,\u00a0and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a powerful paramilitary group led by\u00a0Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.<\/p>\n<p>The fighting has trapped the 10 million residents of Khartoum with no means of escape. Several short-lived ceasefires had been agreed to between the warring groups, with the latest effort to halt the fighting coming early Friday.<\/p>\n<p>RSF said Friday it had agreed to a 72-hour truce on humanitarian grounds on Friday to coincide with the start of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr and to allow residents the opportunity to evacuate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truce coincides with the blessed Eid al-Fitr \u2026 to open humanitarian corridors to evacuate citizens and give them the opportunity to greet their families,\u201d the RSF said in a statement.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5211727\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/04\/21\/id5211727-GettyImages-1252022854-1200x797.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Sudanese army soldiers, loyal to army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, man a position in the Red Sea city of Port Sudan, on April 20, 2023. (AFP via Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>Al-Burhan, who leads the opposing faction, posted a statement to mark Eid, though he did not address the RSF\u2019s announcement of a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur country has been afflicted by a deep wound, which has taken victims, injured many, displaced families, destroyed institutions and homes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are confident that we will overcome this tribulation with the wisdom and strength that will protect the safety of the country and will allow us a safe transition to civilian rule,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Fighting between the RSF and\u00a0Sudan\u2019s army erupted on April 16, derailing an internationally backed plan for a transition to a civilian democracy four years after the fall of Islamist autocrat Omar al-Bashir and two years after a military coup.<\/p>\n<p>Around 10,000 to 20,000 people escaping the fighting have taken refuge in villages along the border inside Chad, U.N. refugee agency UNHCR and the World Food Programme (WFP) said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5211710\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/04\/21\/id5211710-Sudan-2-1200x900.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> People gather at the station to flee from Khartoum during clashes between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and the army in Khartoum, Sudan, on April 19, 2023.
