Stacey Plaskett (D-Virgin Islands) has threatened \u201cTwitter Files\u201d journalist Matt Taibbi with up to five years in prison for allegedly providing \u201cfalse and misleading\u201d testimony before Congress last month.<\/p>\n<p>In an\u00a0April\u00a013 letter (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23784693-2023-04-13_sep_to_taibbi_redacted\">pdf)<\/a> to Taibbi, the lawmaker accused him of lying under oath, stating that he contradicted his congressional testimony in March about Twitter in a subsequent interview with MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan.<\/p>\n<p>Taibbi is one of the multiple\u00a0reporters to be granted exclusive access by Elon Musk to internal Twitter documents, including conversations among employees at the social media platform,\u00a0that showed the social media giant colluding with the federal government and left-leaning organizations to censor tweets from conservative commentators and suppress\u00a0a\u00a0New York Post article about Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop ahead of the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p>The long-time journalist testified to the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government\u2014of which Plaskett is the ranking member, in March.<\/p>\n<p>During that hearing,\u00a0Taibbi said executives at Twitter took moderation \u201crequests\u201d from nonprofits such as the\u00a0Stanford Election Integrity Partnership\u00a0(EIP) and government agencies such as the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) regarding which posts\u00a0should be censored on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEffectively, news media became an arm of a state-sponsored thought-policing system,\u201d\u00a0Taibbi told lawmakers in his opening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?526578-1\/hearing-twitter-documents-content-moderation-decisions\">statement<\/a>. \u201cWe learned Twitter, Facebook, Google, and other companies developed a formal system for taking in moderation \u2018requests\u2019 from every corner of government: the FBI, DHS, HHS, DOD, the Global Engagement Center at [the] State [Department], even the CIA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor every government agency scanning Twitter, there were perhaps 20 quasi-private entities doing the same, including Stanford\u2019s Election Integrity Partnership, Newsguard, the Global Disinformation Index, and others, many taxpayer-funded,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5182311\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/04\/09\/id5182311-Matt-Taibbi-1200x677.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Journalist Matt Taibbi testifies at the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government hearing on \u201cThe Twitter Files\u201d in Washington on March 9, 2023, in a still from video. (House Judiciary Committee\/Screenshot via NTD)<\/figure>\n<h2>Taibbi Admits Mistake<\/h2>\n<p>He continued, \u201cWhat we see in The\u00a0Twitter\u00a0Files is that\u00a0Twitter\u00a0executives did not distinguish between DHS or CISA and this group, EIP. For instance, we would see a communication that said, \u2018From CISA escalated by EIP.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have come to the realization that this bright line that we imagine that exists between, say, the FBI or the DHS or the GEC and these private companies is illusory and that what\u2019s more important is this constellation of kind of quasi-private organizations that do this work,\u201d he testified.<\/p>\n<p>However, during an April 6 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=a597e6Wv_xg\">interview<\/a> with\u00a0MSNBC, host Mehdi Hasan pointed out that\u00a0Taibbi had cited CISA, the\u00a0Cybersecurity, and Infrastructure Security Agency, as having been one of the government agencies to direct Twitter to take down or censor certain tweets, as opposed to CIS, the\u00a0Center for Internet Security.<\/p>\n<p>Taibbi admitted during that interview that he had made a mistake and subsequently updated the error in his own <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtaibbi\/status\/1644399913374023680\">reporting<\/a> of\u00a0his testimony and the Twitter Files.<\/p>\n<p>Despite acknowledging the mistake and correcting it,\u00a0Plaskett, in her\u00a0letter to Taibbi, accused the journalist of \u201calleging that CISA\u2014a government entity\u2014was working with the EIP to have posts removed from social media,\u201d as opposed to making a \u201charmless spelling error.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added that\u00a0Taibbi has not yet corrected the mistake during the hearing in the record in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen presented with this misinformation, you acknowledged that you had made \u2018an error\u2019 by intentionally altering the acronym CIS and you subsequently deleted your erroneous tweet,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile these inaccuracies may seem minor to you, they could lead Congress to rely on inaccurate testimony in considering and\/or passing new legislation which would impact all Americans,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5206092\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/04\/19\/id5206092-Elon-Musk-Twitter-1200x753.jpeg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Twitter logo and a photo of Elon Musk are displayed through a magnifier in this illustration taken on Oct. 27, 2022.
