Su previously served as the California Secretary of Labor.<\/p>\n<p>During the hearing, Su faced substantial pushback from Republicans, who pointed to the $31 billion in fraud that occurred during Su\u2019s time in a California post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can say with a straight face that I don\u2019t think you should be the Secretary of Labor,\u201d Ranking Member Bill Cassidy (R-La.) told Su during his opening remarks.<\/p>\n<p>During his opening remarks, Chairman Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) defended Su, suggesting that President Donald Trump was to blame for Californians\u2019 exploitation of COVID-19 benefits programs. Sanders said the Trump administration did not provide proper guidance to state-level officials on how to administer the funds granted by the $1.9 trillion CARES Act.<\/p>\n<p>However, Republicans weren\u2019t swayed by this defense.<\/p>\n<p>Cassidy pointed to Su\u2019s track record at the Employment Development Department (EDD)\u2014which lost over $31 billion to fraud, Cassidy said, \u201cby waiving fact-checking requirements recommended by the Department of Labor guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder Ms. Su, fraud in California was rampant,\u201d Cassidy said.<\/p>\n<p>To bolster this claim, Cassidy cited the case of rapper Nuke Bizzle, who was arrested after releasing a song rapping about how he had defrauded the California government of COVID-19 relief funds.<\/p>\n<p>Cassidy recited the lyrics during the hearing: \u201cI done got rich off of EDD.\u201d The rapper claims to have made $300,000 by defrauding the program. After his conviction, Bizzle was ordered to pay back $700,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rapper was not held accountable due to Ms. Su\u2019s oversight, but because he publicly admitted to his crime on a rap video,\u201d Cassidy said before having the rap video in question placed in the record.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) also criticized the nominee\u2019s track record in California.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3228573\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/02\/05\/510A4763-1200x800.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Sen. (Charlotte Cuthbertson\/The Epoch Times)<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that under your lead, unemployment insurance payments in California of some $31 billion, went to people who were basically receiving money on a criminal basis, illegally receiving money from the federal government,\u201d Romney said. \u201cThat\u2019s about as much as we provided in military aid to Ukraine. That\u2019s almost twice the total budget of the Department of Labor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder your leadership in California, $31 billion was fraudulently paid out,\u201d Romney reiterated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this case, your record is so severely lacking that I don\u2019t know how in the world it makes sense for the president to nominate you to take over this department,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Romney cited Su\u2019s lack of experience in negotiating labor deals, adding, \u201cand your leadership of an enterprise resulted in $31 billion of fraudulent payments\u2014what am I missing?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Anti-Gig Economy Bill<\/h2>\n<p>Su was also grilled by Republicans on a bill targeting the gig economy that she supported in California.<\/p>\n<p>Cassidy cited Su\u2019s administration of the effort to \u201cdismantle the gig economy in California,\u201d targeting services like Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash as part of the reason for his opposition to the candidate.<\/p>\n<p>These services employ people as independent contractors, meaning they work on an independent basis and are not subject to the same protections or privileges as other types of employees.
