It\u2019s a very necessary plan,\u201d Rep. Dan Meuser (R-Pa.) told NTD, sister media to The Epoch Times, on April 20. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to pay the nation\u2019s debts, but we also need a structure moving forward so people know that we\u2019re serious about reining in what we believe is excessive spending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.), bristled at the idea of being forced to accept a plan under the threat of damage to the economy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5210448\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/04\/20\/id5210448-Screen-Shot-2023-04-20-at-5.03.26-PM-1200x699.png\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Rep. (Courtesy NTD)<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cDuring the Donald Trump presidency, the debt ceiling was raised three times and nobody noticed because the Republicans didn\u2019t want to harm the president,\u201d Himes said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey want to harm this president, so they\u2019re gonna say, \u2018Unless you do what we want, we\u2019re gonna blow up the global economy.\u2019 That\u2019s all that\u2019s happening right now. I\u2019m happy to have a debate with you about whether you want to cut off food stamps to hungry children, but we\u2019re not going to do it because if we don\u2019t do it, you\u2019re gonna blow up the economy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Himes advocates abolishing the debt ceiling altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe only responsible path here is to get rid of the debt ceiling. It\u2019s a sham,\u201d Himes said, saying it only comes into play when one party wants to use it for political leverage. \u201cIt\u2019s always when the Republicans control Congress,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[The debt ceiling] serves purely as a mechanism to threaten the economy of the United States. And so the only responsible thing to do is to get rid of this fiction that is very, very dangerous\u2014that the debt ceiling somehow controls the debt.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>McCarthy, when asked about debt limit increases under President Trump, said that comparison is based on a misunderstanding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there\u2019s a misconception with all of you because I was actually in the room,\u201d McCarthy told NTD. \u201cThat debt ceiling didn\u2019t get raised without negotiations. The difference is the Democrats wouldn\u2019t raise the debt ceiling until President Trump agreed to spend more money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That led to increased spending, which accelerated when President Joe Biden took office, McCarthy said. The result was an additional $6 trillion in national debt and runaway inflation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what we\u2019re simply trying to do is exactly what everybody else has done all these times, to sit down and negotiate just as you have to do at your own kitchen table, and just to explain it to the American public,\u201d McCarthy said.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-Calif.) decried the GOP plan as a dangerous ploy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a real plan. It\u2019s Kabuki, and we\u2019re playing high stakes with people\u2019s lives,\u201d she told NTD, referring to proposed cuts in social programs like Medicare and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5210415\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/04\/20\/id5210415-Screen-Shot-2023-04-20-at-4.54.12-PM-1200x725.png\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Rep.
