A<\/span> proposed plan for the fiscal 2024 budget from the Department of Transportation<\/a>, which includes spending $20 million on female crash dummies, received praise from the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee. <\/p>\n

During an appearance by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg<\/a> before a House Appropriations subcommittee on Thursday, Rep. Rosa DeLauro<\/a> (D-CT) praised Buttigieg’s proposal for the new crash test dummies. She said the secretary plans to make “important investments to address the road safety crisis.” <\/p>\n

DeLauro described the money for the new crash dummies as “critical funding,” according to footage obtained from Yeshiva World News. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis will start to fight the gender inequity among vehicle safety and crash victims,\u201d said DeLauro. <\/p>\n

DeLauro also mentioned that using female crash dummies is “an area I\u2019ve written” to Buttigieg about. <\/p>\n

The Department of Transportation asked for the $20 million “to support cutting-edge safety and accessibility research initiatives,” which include developing test dummies “that represents small-sized adult females.” <\/p>\n

The $20 million would also be used to support research on “the impact of driver distraction from in-vehicle technology interfaces” and on vehicle design considerations to improve accessibility for people with disabilities, according to<\/a> the proposed plan. <\/p>\n

DeLauro’s comments come a day after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy<\/a> (R-CA) revealed his debt ceiling legislation on Wednesday<\/a>. In it, he proposed to raise the debt ceiling over the next year either by $1.5 trillion or until March 31, 2024, whichever comes first. <\/p>\n

The plan would seek to cool inflation and limit government spending by reducing discretionary funds to pre-pandemic levels and capping budget increases at 1% each year. The plan would also “claw back billions of dollars of unspent COVID spending that has sat for the last two years.”<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
