Bill Lee\u2019s sweeping new gun grab proposal, anyone who has a \u201cpsychological disorder\u201d is eligible to lose their Second Amendment rights for 180 days or more but the Republican won\u2019t clarify whether transgenderism is classified as a \u201cpsychological disorder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lee\u2019s proposed legislation <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/THEChrisOB\/status\/1648775043302686721\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">endows<\/a> a third party to accuse someone else of being a threat to themselves or others and prompt a state-led search, seizure, and evaluation. The accused will only have one hearing every 180 days to make a case for why they have a right to exercise their constitutionally guaranteed rights.<\/p>\n<p>As Federalist Senior Editor David Harsanyi <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/20\/bill-lees-red-flag-proposal-is-an-unconstitutional-travesty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently<\/a> put it, Lee\u2019s proposal \u201cforces people accused of a precrime to sit down with state-appointed psychiatrists and lawyers and prove their innocence before the government decides if they can keep their guns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Federal law already prohibits people who have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atf.gov\/file\/4241\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cbeen adjudicated as a mental defective\u201d or \u201ccommitted to a mental institution\u201d<\/a> from buying guns from licensed federal firearms dealers. Lee, however, wants his state to broaden its gun laws to create a temporary \u201corder of protection\u201d against anyone the state determines has a \u201cpsychological disorder, alcohol dependence, or drug dependence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For decades, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2019\/05\/27\/new-health-guidelines-propel-transgender-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">global<\/a> and U.S. medical institutions have <a href=\"https:\/\/nicic.gov\/weblink\/being-transgender-no-longer-mental-disorder-apa-2012#:~:text=Transgender%20people%20will%20now%20be,more%20than%2020%20years%20ago.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">classified transgenderism as a mental disorder<\/a>. It was only in recent years that those institutions partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2018\/06\/19\/said-transgenderism-mental-illness-twitter-blocked-account\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Big Tech<\/a> and other forces to punish anyone who questions whether a serious discomfort with biological sex is a form of mental illness.<\/p>\n<p> The Federalist asked Lee\u2019s office to clarify what, according to his proposal, constitutes a \u201cpsychological disorder\u201d and specify whether transgenderism would qualify for the gun and ammo grab but received no response.<\/p>\n<p>Ever since a transgender shooter shot and killed three nine-year-old kids and three adults at a private Christian school in Nashville in March, Tennessee Republicans have worked hard to protect students and their constituents\u2019 constitutional rights.<\/p>\n<p>On the federal level, Sens. Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty of Tennessee introduced a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackburn.senate.gov\/services\/files\/C9909869-9DCC-4DD8-BB2B-D55AD18CD113\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new bill<\/a>\u00a0that would funnel $900 million taxpayer dollars to both public and private schools to hire armed security and \u201charden\u201d classrooms with enhanced physical defenses. On the state level, Tennesee Republicans workshopped bills to fund school security teams and punish <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/04\/tennessee-republicans-boot-democrats-who-incited-insurrection-from-committees-threaten-expulsion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">their Democrat colleagues<\/a> for their roles in a gun-control and transgender-themed insurrection. <\/p>\n<p>Just a few weeks ago, Lee was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2023\/04\/03\/nashville-covenant-school-shooting-lee-proposes-140m-for-armed-guards-at-schools\/70077168007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leading and aiding<\/a> these efforts. Now, he\u2019s attempting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SkK9k3uHFA8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fend off praise<\/a> from Democrats like President Joe Biden, who commended the GOP governor for \u201csigning an Executive Order to expand background checks and calling on the Tennessee statehouse to pass a red flag law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope more Republican officials will follow suit and take action,\u201d Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/04\/16\/statement-from-president-joe-biden-on-last-nights-gun-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said in a statement<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>While pushing for red flag laws, Lee refuses to prioritize fixing Tennesee laws that would have prevented this which is allowing Christian schools with preschools to arm their teachers. <a href=\"https:\/\/law.justia.com\/codes\/tennessee\/2021\/title-49\/chapter-50\/part-8\/section-49-50-803\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Under current state law<\/a>, private kindergarten through 12th-grade schools can set their own handgun-carrying policies, but the law bars schools with pre-kindergarten or preschool programs from protecting themselves.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>   Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and co-producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
