The outlet reported that the airport handles 45% of Canada\u2019s air cargo traffic from 175 countries worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Peel Regional Police told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-04-20\/gold-heist-at-canada-s-biggest-airport-investigated-by-mounties?leadSource=uverify%20wall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg News<\/a> that a plane carrying a container with more than C$20 million ($14.8 million) in gold and other \u201chigh-value goods\u201d was taken from a cargo holding area of the airport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn aircraft arrived here at the airport in the early evening,\u201d Inspector Stephen Duivesteyn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/news\/20-million-in-gold-high-value-goods-stolen-in-heist-at-toronto-pearson-airport-1.6364365\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cAs per normal procedure, the aircraft was unloaded, and cargo was transported from the aircraft to a holding cargo facility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is very rare,\u201d Duivesteyn said, adding the gold was removed by \u201cillegal means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sun reported authorities allegedly believe the movie-like heist was carried out locally and have launched an investigation into organized crime groups in the region, which has been known to have either people or allies placed at Pearson, monitoring airport activities.<\/p>\n<p>The outlet said investigators don\u2019t believe the gold was stolen to fund terrorists, asserting that authorities would have shut down portions of the airport as soon as they became aware of the robbery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel this to be an isolated incident,\u201d Duivesteyn <a href=\"https:\/\/toronto.citynews.ca\/2023\/04\/20\/toronto-pearson-airport-gold-heist-robbery-security-incident-rcmp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cFor the public worried about flying out, there should be no concern.
