(Kamran Jebreili\/AP Photo)<\/figure>\n<p>The senior State official predicted \u201ca critical mass of countries\u201d will support the vehicle emissions targets alongside other U.S. agenda items.<\/p>\n<p>Biden will also advocate a goal of zero emissions from global shipping, currently a leading driver of greenhouse gas emissions, by the middle of this century.<\/p>\n<h2>The US, China, and Climate<\/h2>\n<p>First launched in March 2009 by then-President Barack Obama, the MEF brings together countries from across the planet. Russia, a participant in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.g7.utoronto.ca\/summit\/2009laquila\/2009-mef.html\">inaugural July 2009<\/a> meeting in Italy, was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/06\/18\/chairs-summary-of-the-major-economies-forum-on-energy-and-climate-held-by-president-joe-biden\/\">target of criticism<\/a> in the June 2022 forum.<\/p>\n<p>Despite growing tensions between China and the United States, China has continued to attend.<\/p>\n<p>Kerry has consistently stressed the need for coordination between the two countries on climate and energy.
