Tom Cotton confronted the deputy attorney general Wednesday over the agency implementing a two-tiered justice system to crack down on political opponents. <\/p>\n<p>During a hearing with the Senate Judiciary Committee, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco was pressed about the department exploiting the 2002 Accountability Act to \u201cprosecute hundreds of Americans for their actions on Jan. 6, 2021, on the grounds of the United States Capitol.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanbar.org\/groups\/center-pro-bono\/resources\/program-management\/nonprofits_sarbanes_oxley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">law<\/a> passed in the aftermath of Enron\u2019s collapse prohibits actions that \u201cotherwise obstruct, influence, or impede an official proceeding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to be clear, I\u2019m not talking here about persons who committed violent acts against law enforcement officers and destroyed property,\u201d Cotton said. The Arkansas senator emphasized the Justice Department was using the law to prosecute individuals who \u201cin some cases, were merely present on the Capitol grounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"April 19, 2023: Cotton Q&#038;A during Senate Judiciary Hearing\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l8RWtfjFydU?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cJust this week, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing in New York City and it\u2019s been reported that a democratic mob was in the hallway trying to get into the doors and stop that hearing from proceedings,\u201d Cotton added. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/protesters-rush-hallway-outside-jim-jordans-hearing-against-alvin-bragg-1794834\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According <\/a>to Newsweek, demonstrators stormed the hallways fo the Jacob Javits Federal Building where House lawmakers convened a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/17\/democrats-blame-crime-on-guns-not-criminals-in-manhattan-house-judiciary-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">field hearing<\/a> on New York City crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas your department begun to investigate this effort to obstruct or influence the official proceeding of the House Judiciary Committee in New York City?\u201d Cotton asked. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not aware of those events,\u201d Monaco said, declining to comment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m simply asking if the Southern District of New York has stood up a task force to investigate all these people who corruptly influenced and obstructed a proceeding of the House Judiciary Committee,\u201d Cotton said.<\/p>\n<p>Monaco offered another non-answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe men and women of the Justice Department that have been pursuing and bringing the cases of the events that occurred in the Capitol have been doing incredible work,\u201d Monaco said. <\/p>\n<p>Cotton brought up another episode of far-left activists obstructing official government proceedings in Nashville. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about in Tennessee, a democratic mob obstructed the Tennessee legislature recently to such a severe extent that the legislature expelled two of its members,\u201d Cotton said. \u201cIs the Department of Justice investigating all those protestors who disrupted the official proceeding of the Tennessee legislature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not aware of any such investigation,\u201d Monaco replied. <\/p>\n<p>Cotton referenced a third case of left-wing intimidation tactics targeting Supreme Court justices. Demonstrators <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/05\/12\/white-house-press-secretary-encourages-angry-mobs-surrounding-supreme-court-justices-homes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">protested<\/a> outside justices\u2019 homes to coerce judges into protecting abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are not criminal masterminds,\u201d Cotton told Monaco. \u201cThey broadcast on social media when they were going to be violating the law, and there\u2019s not a single arrest \u2014 much less prosecution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Nationwide Issues\u00a0Survey out last summer\u00a0conducted by the Trafalgar Group and the Convention of States Action\u00a0found <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/09\/4-in-5-americans-see-two-tiered-justice-system-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4 in 5<\/a> Americans see a two-tiered justice system. <\/p>\n<p>The overt politicization of the Justice Department for <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/14\/19-times-democrats-and-doj-deliberately-politicized-law-enforcement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decades<\/a> led House Republicans to convene a Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government under the Judiciary Committee chaired by Ohio Rep. Federal law enforcement officials confiscated 15 boxes of allegedly classified material after their search of the 128-room complex,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/08\/09\/fbi-even-searched-melanias-wardrobe-in-trump-raid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including<\/a> former First Lady Melania Trump\u2019s wardrobe. The search warrant probing potential violations of the Presidential Records Act was personally <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/12\/breaking-fbi-raid-warrant-demanded-seizure-of-literally-any-record-trump-ever-saw-during-4-year-presidential-term\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approved<\/a> by Attorney General Merrick Garland, whose Supreme Court nomination was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/09\/conflict-of-interest-much-garland-oversees-raid-on-president-who-denied-him-scotus-seat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thwarted<\/a> by Trump\u2019s triumphant 2016 victory.<\/p>\n<p>Americans saw the DOJ demonstrate politicized double standards again this month following the prosecution of a pro-Trump meme creator while an administration nuclear waste expert was slapped on the wrist for luggage theft.<\/p>\n<p>Sam Brinton, President Joe Biden\u2019s allegedly \u201cnon-binary\u201d administrator in the Department of Energy, was ordered to pay less than $5,000 in fines for stealing women\u2019s luggage.
