NTAs constitute the first step in beginning the legal deportation process.<\/p>\n<p>But ICE and Border Patrol have been so inundated by illegal aliens that many have been released without being issued an NTA.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4450785\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/05\/06\/ICE-Tae-Johnson-GettyImages-1236140564-1200x800.jpeg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Tae Johnson, acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, at a press conference in Washington, on Oct. 26, 2021. (Roberto Schmidt\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>Johnson asked Congress to authorize ICE to make \u201cvirtual\u201d arrests by issuing NTAs online in order to begin the process of deporting the millions of illegal aliens currently in the country.<\/p>\n<h2>Backlogs Until 2033<\/h2>\n<p>Johnson made the request during an exchange with Ranking Member Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), one of the most conservative Democrats in the House.<\/p>\n<p>During the exchange, Cuellar expressed \u201cconcerns\u201d about the immigration backlog built up in some American cities. In New York City and San Antonio, it is projected to take until 2033 for illegal immigrants to even appear before ICE. After that, it can take another two to three years before they get a day in court.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a little concerning that some of them have to wait until 2033 just to appear before you, then they get another 2-3 years before they even go to an immigration judge,\u201d Cuellar said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4225052\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/01\/20\/rep-cuellar-1200x844.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Rep. (Kevin Dietsch\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson replied that ICE has initiatives underway that it hopes will help to expedite the process in the most backlogged cities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cvirtual arrest\u201d option was one such initiative Johnson said that ICE was pursuing.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson cited \u201ca request to the Hill to give us the authority that we can actually serve it virtually and agree to have people accept their documents electronically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This scheme poses practical as well as legal challenge<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is considering \u201cvirtual\u201d arrests to address a growing backlog of unprocessed illegal immigrants.
