(Jemal Countess\/Getty Images for Green New Deal Network)<\/figure>\n<p>Describing the advantages of stricter regulations, he argued that \u201cthose benefits are a bonanza of benefits to our climate, to drivers, and to our health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to make sure they also benefit Union-American workers,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h2>Lummis Questions Mineral Sourcing<\/h2>\n<p>Sens. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) and Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) voiced skepticism regarding the EPA\u2019s vision.<\/p>\n<p>Lummis asked one expert witness, Kathy Harris of the Natural Resources Defense Council, whether focusing on tailpipe emissions alone ignored greenhouse gas emissions from the rare earth mining needed to produce electric vehicle batteries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have been many studies that have shown that electric vehicles today, from well to wheel, are still cleaner than compared to a gasoline vehicle,\u201d Harris responded.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3674510\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2021\/01\/27\/GettyImages-1229555853-1-e1611788516880.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) meets with the media in Washington on Nov. 9, 2020. (Stefani Reynolds-Pool\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>The Wyoming senator also ran through a list of minerals used in electric vehicle batteries, pointing out that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/in-depth-bidens-ev-plan-could-be-key-to-chinas-global-economic-dominance_5201194.html\">China<\/a>, Indonesia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo dominate production and downstream processing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo any of these countries have anywhere near the stringent environmental regulations the United States has?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot speak to that today,\u201d Harris said before apologizing and correcting herself: \u201cNot to my awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a rare earth mine in my state that has been trying to open for over ten years and still doesn\u2019t have the environmental permitting to open,\u201d Lummis said.<\/p>\n<p>A staffer for Lummis told The Epoch Times that the lawmaker had in mind the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metaltechnews.com\/story\/2021\/10\/13\/tech-metals\/rare-earths-project-reemerges-in-wyoming\/735.html\">Rare Element Resources Bear Lodge Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3707326\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2021\/02\/23\/GettyImages-105983996-1200x800.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Soil containing various rare earth elements for export at a port in Lianyungang, China, in a file photo. (STR\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere is no way that the standards and the materials needed to produce and manufacture in the United States can happen in ten years, and to ramp up the supply even in foreign countries that have far lower environmental standards, not to mention human labor standards\u2014this is not possible to do,\u201d Lummis said.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Not Even a Consideration for Trucking\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) questioned another expert witness, Andrew Boyle.<\/p>\n<p>Boyle is co-president of the trucking company Boyle Transportation and first vice chairman of the American Trucking Associations, a trade group representing the trucking industry.<\/p>\n<p>Boyle had earlier testified to the risks of a rapid push for electric-powered trucks because of their current technological limitations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA clean diesel truck can spend 15 minutes fueling anywhere in the country and then have a range of about 1,200 miles before fueling again. In contrast, today\u2019s long-haul battery-electric trucks have a range of about 150 to maybe 330 miles and can take up to ten hours to charge,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Cramer asked Boyle about the cost of insuring a large electric truck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to tell because the consumer-facing EV product is so much further ahead,\u201d Boyle said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4607391\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/07\/19\/GettyImages-1345212597-1200x801.jpeg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Sen.
